Because, by setting a firm date this can be the opportunity insurgents or terrorists could use to plot widespread violence against the fledgling government of Iraq. Sure it may quell violence in the meantime, but as bad as Iraq is now, it would only get worse.
Another reason for not setting a deadline is that perhaps terrorists will step up violence against US forces, since they know we are leaving anyway.
Either way you slice it, it's a huge turd sandwich and we're all going to have to take a bite.

Withdrawing our troops from any country that is still at war is complicated. The more troops we withdraw the more those left behind are in danger. The Iraq government has asked us to stay a bit longer, I understand this, we went in uninvited, now want to leave them, unprepared to protect themselves, while we cut & run. Not a good idea. Our reputation in the world is bad enough, we don't need to add to it. We made the mess, we need to help them come to grips with it. The only other way is to withdraw all of our troops at one time, almost impossible to do! My opinion, we are going to have to bite the bullet on this one & help give these people a chance to save themselves.

If the U.S. were to set a date for withdrawing troops, or even a rough timeline, than that basically tells the insurgents to just take a break until we leave, and then they can take over the country left undefended.
Whether people want to admit it or not, the war in Iraq has turned in strong favor of the U.S. and its allies. Setting a timeline now would only give the insurgents and terrorists time to rebuild to a point that the Iraq military and police force could not defend themselves.

The main argument against setting a deadline is that the terrorists would just lie low until after our troops withdraw, and then go about their terrorist business.

Lets examine this dialog:
U.S.- OK you guys, we're pulling out at 5:00 A.M. on August 5th.
Achmed the terrorist- OK Abdul, we're gonna hold of any attacks for now. Let's bandage every body up, horde all our supplies and ammunition, build some bombs and rest for awhile.
Abdul the terrorist- Sounds great, I can use a little rest, then what?
Achmed the terrorist- On August 6th at 5:00 A.M. we will send the infidels to meet Allah! Then we shall rule once again!

Because a specific pull out date just informs the enemy exactly when we will be leaving... they just wait until we are gone and resume their attacks... If we don't leave until we defeat them.. then that isn't a problem. That's the way wars are conducted... By winners anyway.... losers "redeploy" to the rear.

because al qaeda doesnt have one for stopping attacks in iraq or starting them here. i realize that national defense is a rough topic for the pelosi/reid regime supporters to understand so ill simplify it for you. its either there or here and the enemy wants you dead. if you value peace you fight, if you value cowardice you support unilateral surrender. they care of little else and obviously support those who would rather not fight as it makes conquest easier.
