To answer your question, they are made, not born (like anything, there are a few naturals at it, but anybody can be successful at it). Over 10 years I've seen many different personalities be very successful at it. I've seen selfish Type As, friendly and outgoing people, shy people and thorough people do well. I myself am introverted but make quota every year.
The key is to make calls, follow through (!!) and realize there will be ups and downs (that is, stay with it). As you go along you'll find what works for you and what doesn't and adapt.
I highly recommend starting out with The 25 Habits of Successful Sales People for a starting point. Salesguy.org also published a list of traits for successful sales people.
Good luck! I left another career to become a sales person and I love it. Absolutely love it. There are ups and downs and I'm not dependent on one person to give me a pay raise.

One of the riches men in the world Lee Iaccoca's once said, " If you have a good product you don't have to be a good salesman." You also need to stand behind what you market not just to make money but something you really believe in that could really benefit others, find people who see value in what you market. Honesty and integrity is very important. The only way to find out if it's for you is to try it, keep an open mind, learn to be coach able, don't get easily discouraged allow your self time to grow, understand that we must all go threw failures to allow our selfs to grow, if you become discouraged your probably just tired get rest and you'll feed charged up each morning, remember each day brings new hope.
If your interested in a money making opportunity anyone can do, drop me a line, pretty interesting stuff. Best in your success. Like Donald Trump always says, NEVER QUIT!!

Do you have a naturally outgoing personality? Are you comfortable talking with strangers? I do believe there is a certain amount of "being born with it" or having the gift, but not entirely. If the answers to the previous questions were "Yes", then you could probably learn how.
