The book must be read in the language it was written - Hebrew, the book as you know was translated to all languages losing much of its power through the translation as the translator put emphasis on what he thought was important. Jews believe the Book was written by GOD
the first word in the bible BEH'RE'SHEET was translated into "in the beginning"
SO lets do בראשית in Hebrew the first word of the Bible, the first part of the word בר = wheat, second part ברא =created, third part ראש = head,
the forth part אש= fire, etc
The translation has nothing to do with what was intended

Well, if the truth were that easy, we'd all believe in it. But ask yourself WHY the truth isn't easy for anyone. Look at the things we get into and even embrace.

If you read the chapters on the Law in the Bible, you get a pit on your stomach when you come across certain issues. Its like a reflection in the mirror you don't like. (BE honest now.) Even the 10 commandments is enough to make somebody sick because there's at least a few that have become common to us that we break. (THINK about that one...)

And I'll be honest, The Bible is all you need. You really DON'T need guide books and study texts. Only should you want to indulge in the more, "Historical side." (Inspirational is not bad, so I'll leave those alone.)

I, on the other hand have plenty because I love everything about the Bible. From beginning to end.

And look at the ones who DON'T follow the Bible, (Or any religion for that matter) they usually wind up being a--holes.

A modern language translation is easier to read. I like the New World Translation because it is a literal word-for-word translation and very accurate.

It also helps to know that the Bible has a theme. It is "Jehovah's Kingdom", the heavenly government Jesus taught his followers to pray for at Matthew 6:9,10. "Let you kindgom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Every book in the Bible contributes to that theme.

The Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament) covers the time from Adam and Eve to 200 years before Jesus. The Greek scriptures (New Testament) covers the time from Jesus down today and through the time when the Kingdom is the only government left on the earth. If you want to start to reading it, you would enjoy Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the four gospels about the life of Jesus.

Yes, it seems difficult but like Jesus's illustrations, it weeds out the people who are only curiosity seekers. If you make a practice of reading the Bible a little bit a day, you give Jehovah something to bless.

The bible is God's word, although he himself did not write it. The bible was written by man, and, depending on which book you read, is influenced mostly or entirely by God or Jesus.
With that said, I think God had the bible created for us to think. If we knew everything about God, then it wouldn't really be God, would it? Maybe God wants us to use our brains a little, try to understand things on our own. For basic "rules" and "regulatios" (you might call them), God gave Moses the ten Commandments for man to know what's right and what's wrong.
Also keep in mind the NIV (New International Version) is a bit easier to understand.

I hope I've helped!

Much of the confusion comes from the fact that all the books and writings from which the bible has been taken, were in so many different languages and written by people of many different beliefs, but it was translated by those of only one religion and it had to fit their personal ideas and ideals, so what you end up with is many contradictions and mistranslated ideas from the minds of select men, not god(s).
Since men aren't perfect there is a lot of conflicting ideas, 'subtle' changes to the original meanings, and many things that were removed to make it more acceptable to the followers of the catholic/christian faith.
I, personally have always found it quite easy to understand, but I suppose that comes from an upbringing of classic literature.

GOD did not write the bible. The bible was written by many different old men with there own ideas, the the bible was mistranslated many different times through many languages and add to that several centuries of misinterpretation and changes in the general meaning of words and now you have utter confusion and never ending debates about what GOD really meant by those things he supposedly put in that great old book of tall tales.

I can only speculate as to God's purpose to make the scriptures complicated; to see who truly desires His knowledge, His word. As far as man. The bible is complicated because it is written in an acient language with an ancient mindset and understanding of the world. This does not mean their thoughts and understanding is primitive and therefore, not pertinant to our age. In fact, when you study the scriptures you find out they saw a great deal more into reality than this age. We have forgotten alot. That is why I am always grateful for the scriptures and their complexity. I hope this has been helpful. May the Lord bless and keep you. May the light of His face shine upon you.

Don't pay attention to the dictionaries and guides. Just read it and don't pay attention to chapters numbers or verse numbers. A bunch of the new testament books are written as letters. Get an easy to understand version written in simple English, such as the New American Standard Version and read it just like a letter... like you would read a letter from a friend.

I think a daily reader might help you. It is a small book that tells you to read a certain portion of the bible each day and helps explain the message. There is also study bibles you can get. My personal favorite is NIV Life application study bible. You should go to your local christian store and give it a look over. It explains in simple meaning what the bible is telling you. It is important that you find A bible you are comfortable reading and one you can understand. I hope this helps. Phil

Lots to study because it is 2,000+ years old and is translated from several languages....
Cultural and social situations were much different, and some words just do not have a literal translation to other languages.
So to capture the intent and message there needs to be study guides, dictionaries, etc.
There are few other books that are this widely read that are this old (in fact, none), so the supplements are needed.
But the Holy Spirit is what helps us understand, without it it is difficult....
