VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http;//www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities for thousands and thousands of organizations. That's a great place to start looking for volunteering opportunities at any time of year.

Like Thanksgiving Day, volunteering at Christmas time can be difficult, because organizations are overwhelmed with requests from people wanting to do such at this time of year. So plan to make a lot of inquiries and talk to a lot of organizations before you find the opportunity that suits your availability and interests.

The charities are going on all the time, right now you shouldn't have a problem finding one.
Salvation Army, ringing the bell outside a door to collect.
Church Charities, collecting, sorting and distributing food to the poor and homebound.

Contact a Catholic Church in your area, because they seem to do more charitable work (no insult intended) than other faiths. If they have no charity work within the Catholic Church itself, they will at least know of a resource which needs help, and will probably be praising that someone actually wants to help.

Your local animal shelter should have a wish list of things to collect. blankets, puppy food, and rubber toys (so we can disenfect them). Walking dogs is always some thing you can do year around too.
