As I am older yet love this game, can I play it on my Playstation 1 game controller? I would appreciate any help you can offer me at this time. Thank you for your help in advance.

For controller you'll need an adapter. But you won't be able to launch PS3 game on PS1 console.

I've been successful in using my PS1 controller on my PS2, but only the one with the analog sticks.
If you mean the console, then no, the game won't work in your PS1 console.

No ps2/ps3 game will work on the ps1, but ps1 games work for both ps2 and ps3. Ps2 games work for ps3, and ps3 games ONLY work for that system. The ps1 controller will work on most games for both systems, but not all.
For example the ps2 game "Tony Hawks Project 8", ps1 controller won't work! It also could be a problem with the condition of the controller, or the model of the controller.

but the actual game console, no, which is what i think you meant to ask.
ps1 games work on ps2 and ps3, but it doesn't apply the other way around.

Well if it works on a PS2, it SHOULD work on a PS1
