He was extremely anticommunist. He is also credited as much as Regan and Gorbachev by political scientist for bring down Communism. I would suggest you read one of the many biographies on him.

I have many, many issues with JPII however I will not go so far as the first answerer and have no respect for him. I respect him very much as a man, his life and personal actions in WWII and in dealing with communism were truly Christlike. However his Papacy, universality, and the direction in which he steered the Church away from VII left alot to be desired.

Also to the first answerer he screamed so much about the Fr. Jerzy because it was one of his lifelong closest friends.

The things I can remember about him and communism from memory is that he was very active supporting the Solidarity movement in Poland which ultimately brought down the communist regime there.

I imagine if you google the words Poland, Solidarity, and John Paul II together you would get more web sites about the subject than you would be able to read.

No, I don't. I have zero respect for that man. He spent so much time screaming about a Polish priest yet remaind largely silent about the murder of liberation theologian Bishop Romero.
