I'm turning 61 in January and am thinking the same thing but will wait until at least 62......... 13 1/2 months ! I wanted to retire about 40 but didn't plan very well and haven't hit the Lotto, yet. ;+)
My plan is to get an RV or travel trailer that is in good shape (I now own a beater) and travel the USA in it.
The things I am worried about are:
Health Insurance
Having enough money to live on
Will I be travelling alone?
I will probably be working part time (under the table when I can) to keep busy and keep the cash flowing.
GOOD luck

My wife and I are both well into our 60s and there is never enough time to accomplish what we want to do. I first retired at 62, stayed off for a year, got bored and went back to a part-time job. You could try that right off the bat, so you can e-a-s-e into retirement. My wife, on the other hand is so involved with volunteer work, that she hardly has time for me (which is a good; I like to do my own thing).
I recently retired a second time with the intention of spending more time writing fiction, drawing and painting. In between, I can do a little housework and fix dinner.
Do you like to travel? Get involved with your local senior center. They often have planned trips and you can make new friends. Think senior centers are for old people? Ours are hoppin' Baby!

My father retired at 50. He traveled and did things he wanted to do, then he got bored. So he went back to work. He is 55 and working a full time job again. I don't think he will actually stop working for a while, he just didn't know what to do with him self.
But if you have many things you want to do, and can live on your retirement, then go for it.

Well if you like working keep it up otherwise branch out and try new things. You could become a volunteer at charities, thrift shops and all kinds of causes. You could become a babysitter and help a mom. Theres lots of things to do.

Go for it as life is short. I retired when I was 47
and have enjoyed every day of it. You can always
find plenty to do as you have more time on your
hands.

I agree with the first comment. Your life just begins. Just because you retire, doesn't mean you die or lead a boring life. You make your own happiness! Good luck with your plans for the future.
