The only shore duty I had in 4 years was White Sands Missile Range, you don't want to go there. Although never stationed there Hawaii would be great, I have been there a number of times.
Joining the Navy means that, more then likely, you will be going to sea. You will be seeing the world. Good home ports would be San Diego, Mayport, FL or Yokuska Japan. The best kind of ship would be a destroyer. Reasons being smaller crew and you get to know almost everyone aboard, the chow is better then a large ship and they are not as gungho. I served on a tin can and a cruiser and the can was much better.

You are going to go where they want you to go but if you have a choice it can also depend on if you are married or not.

Pearl Harbor was awesome been there twice. Our kids loved it and we had no problems with them going to school. It is also a good place for singles. We have been in Washington State and it was nice, definitely not for the single person though. Mayport in Florida is a ehhh... it is alright but not the greatest as far as we feel. If you really want to go overseas Japan is wonderful, so it Italy (from what I have heard), Spain, Portugal, Singapore.

Rota, Spain is pretty awesome, as is Pearl Harbor, HI. Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico was a favorite but it got shut down unfortunately. If you can deal with the high prices, San Diego is great. I would not recommend the Norfolk or Little Creek areas.

NAS Whidbey I sland was Beautiful i loved it there, youreally have little choice your first tour though. Just make the most of where ever you go. Its been my experiance that the people that hate where they are stationed are the ones who stay inside and play video games all day and never get out and expierance the new duty station.

Best place I was ever stationed was Japan, without a doubt. Hawaii is nice, but not if you have kids. Spain and Italy are also good.

Forget about stateside; if you're giving away your freedom to Uncle Sam, get some free travel out of it!

San Diego is a good home port. I have heard that Pearl Harbor is nice, but it is expensive there (my cousin is stationed there on shore duty).

I would avoid Norfolk if you can. The base is too big and there are too many big-wigs there.
