Funny, but true.

Winter (and the static electricity) have arrived in our home. I love giving our dogs massages but I keep zapping them. So far they don't seem to mind, but I worry that I'm going to condition them into avoiding me. :-p

I never had this problem (that I can remember) with previous dogs. Any suggestions?

1. We don't have carpet - all hardwood/tiles/etc. (except one area rug).

2. The zapping is happening *while* I'm massaging them. I'm building up a charge from rubbing their coats (and then touching exposed skin by accident, like on their nose).

3. I'm definitely starting up the humidifiers.

Aww, poor puppies. Quite the shock for the little guys!

Hmm... before you pet them, touch something conductive. It could be a door knob, a metal pen, or even your hubby. If you feel a zap, then you've released the energy.

Good luck!

I would say spray static gaurd on your socks or your carpet, but I don't know if that's healthy for your pets. I know what works in our house though and that's a humidifier. Get a small one that you can bring with you from room to room if needed. They are great for the winter and stop the static charge.

Static electricity is caused by a low percentage of moisture in the air. You want to try to keep the humidity of your home at around 40%, to increase the moisture, you can boil a pot of water on the stove or invest in a humidifier.

Humidifier. That, or you could boil a big pot of water on your stove all day (my mom has an old gas stove that heats her back room and she always puts an old pot full of water on top of it in the winter time...keeps that room more humid and more comfortable). Not only will it help reduce the amount of static in your house, but it will help keep your dog's skin from drying out.

You need a humidifier in your home. It will cut down on the air being so dry and then the static electricity will go away too.

A humidifier in your home would relieve the dryness in the air.
