Loud music is if you want to dance. If I go to a sit down restaurant where the only thing you do is talk with your friends, why would they play loud music? This makes no sense to me. Is there a special pleasure of not being able to hear conversation? Is screaming across a table enjoyable for some people? I don't get it.

It's not nice in a big group, then... you have quite some problems talking with each other. With just 2 people it can be nice since you'll have to get closer to each other to talk...

With more then 2 it becomes annoying.

In general I also like to hear some nice music on the background and being able to talk without having to raise my voice.

But... who knows who was in that restaurant, maybe some clients where making some very strange remarks and the owner just pumped up the volume...

Would you enjoy your food when 4 surgeons where talking about a back passage operation at the next table ? ;-)

Restaurants which play loud music do so so that people dont stay long after eating. that way they can get a higher throughput of customers.Generally this happens in low to medium price restaurants because they need to serve more meals in order to make a profit. You'll notice though, that in an expensive restaurant there is much less music or noise. Since they need less customers per day, they tend to have a good ambiance and encourage customers to stay with coffee and whatnot.

It would seem to me that a restaurant that plays loud music would not be the best choice if one wanted to sit and talk. Each restaurant owner has to make a business decision regarding the atmosphere or ambiance they wish to provide for their customers enjoyment. Along the same lines, we, as paying consumers, must make a personal decision about where we wish to spend our money. I would suggest that if one does not care for loud music inhibiting their conversation, one should choose to dine at a quieter location more conducive to doing so.

I know exactly, what you are talking. There have been times, when I actually ask to see the Manager, and politely asked if they can please turn down the music. For the most part, they have.

There is a time, and place for just about everything, and in a nice sit down restaurant where you come in with friends, or family.

You should not have to yell across the table.

It's just the management being inconsiderate. Have you tried asking them to turn down the music so you don't have to shout to talk? If it's the type of place where they have a jukebox, part of the reason people go there is to listen to the music. If you don't want the loud music, then go somewhere else when you want to talk.

I've never been to a restaurant that plays loud music, unless it's mostly a bar that has a restaurant in it.

Fine dining doesn't mean Don Pablos (although it's good as heck).

They do it to get you out of the building. The faster that people are done with their tables, the more people they can serve, and thus, the more money that they make. A business can't make any more money off of you while you are just sitting around talking, and it can be really frustrating to everyone waiting for a table, as well as the person in charge of seating, because they can't have your table that you are not using for eating.

I think you're right. My favorite place to eat is called "7A" in New York City but sometimes the music is really loud. It's always really busy and its noisy with the talking and then you have to yell over the music to hear. I still love that place though.

I worked in a restaurant and if the customers were having a business meeting, or just wanted to talk, they let us know to turn the music down.......remember, the customer is ALWAYS right.

Once it gets later in the evening, around Happy Hour, everyone preferred the music to be louder........and believe me, they let us know!
