Recently, not quite a month ago i bought an '01 Dodge Dakota with the 3.9L V6. Right now it has about 74,000 miles on it. I want to extend the life of this engine as far as possible, so switching to synthetic is something i have been looking into.

I have not reached the time for an oil change yet, so i can't say what was used previously (dino or syn). I've read that switching from dino to sythetic can cause oil seals to leak and/or make the truck use oil. What can you confirm on this?

If switching is my best bet, what do you recommend as far as brand and grade?

the only kind of oil i will use is Mobil one synthetic oil,its the best there is on the market right now,and you can run around 7-8 thousand miles on one oil change with it,real easy.i change at 75-8500 miles and its still in good shape, but your not going to hurt anything by changing to synthetic oil it will only make the engine last longer that's all,if i was going to use synthetic, i would use Mobil one,its the best money can buy right now for conventional use, good luck with it.

I only use synthetic oil. I've had my Mountaineer for about 40K miles. For about a year I took it to open nights at the drag strip. The thing still runs as strong as when I got it. You might have to replace some seals by changing, but chances are with the mileage you would have had to do that in the next couple years anyways. You should get at least an extra 50K miles out of the engine by using synthetic. The best brand in my opinion and experience is Penzoil Full Synthetic. I change it every 3K miles, but I've known people who've gone 15K and the oil is still nice and clean. When it comes to grade, use the grade recommended by the manufacturer for the truck, unless you have some sort special use for the vehicle.

Switching to synthetic to gain engine life is a myth. Properly scheduled oil changes with conventional oil will give you the same engine life as will synthetic oil.

If you want to blow the extra money it costs to use synthetic, that's your call. Just don't expect the engine to last any longer because you used synthetic.

Do NOT change the kind of oil that is used in an engine of that age. For best life stay with one kind of oil - it really does not match which one you pick as long as you change the oil and filter per manual or more frequently.

the synth. won't cause leaks, it is just thinner and more likely to leak which is why often when you make the switch, the synth will leak. I would recommend against switching to a synthetic. do regular oil changes and don't drive like your in nascar.
