My first guess is "nothing" because it sounds like that riddle from a few years back.
The pagan clue leads me to believe that it is "nature" Or "Life."
The final thought that I have though is "humanity" because some rare people are very good, others are so destructive that they create their own hell, and yet we have complex and simple ones as well.
And yes I do have pagan leanings.
