40x is because you can zoom in farther but if your not going to need much zoom then it shouldnt matter much

The first home cameras had 6x zoom because that is about the maximum a person can handhold. 10 to 16x requires some support, although a practiced professional can sometime get useable results off-handed. 25x requires the use of a sturdy tripod. 40 to 60x are used at sporting events with $100,000 camera support sytems to hold the works steady. A good 40x lens will be so heavy and awkward that it would uncomfortable to use even when not zoomed in. Such long lenses also have a problem obtaining enough light execpt in brilliant daylignt shooting. i would be hesitant to buy a lens more than 16x for general use.

in theory, 40x optical is better than 25x optical. in that it gets you closer, but in reality, the quality of the optics is going to be more important. If the 40x uses poor optics and the 25x uses quality opics, the 40 may be fuzzy at 25x and really bad at 40x while the 25 with quality optics would be sharp and clear all the way to it's max.
