I had a short bar and never played with it and still managed to chip a tooth while eating. It hurt and was expensive. The plastic type bar and balls just got gross and even though I had the piercing for over a year, my tongue wanted to heal on the bar.

Quite a bit. It cracks the teeth. Unless you have plastic jewelry, I don't see how you would avoid damage long term.

MEL,

THE WORST THING PEOPLE DO IS GET A LONG BAR AND METAL BALL TIPS.
INVERIABLY THEY HAPPEN TO BITE DOWN AT THE WRONG TIME AND CHIP/BREAK THEIR BACK TOOTH.
IF YOU GET ONE HAVE A NARROW SHORT STEM FOR IT
