Do you actually mean "the best"? A top of the range turntable will cost around £15,000 - but "the best" always costs big money.

If you have a price in mind (and whether you mean a DJ or hi-fi turntable), I can give you a better idea of what's "the best for £xxx".

--------------------------------------------------------

OK, £500 will get you a very good quality turntable. A few possibilities are:

Clearuadio Emotion
The Funk Firm 'Funk Vector'
Pro-Ject 2 Xperience (yup, that's the correct spelling!)
Pro-Ject RPM 5
Rega P5
Roksan Radius 5

Personally, I'd be looking to buy from a specialist hi-fi dealer (check out your local Yellow Pages). Turntables are delicate, precision instruments - I wouldn't want to risk buying from the 'net.

I have an old Rega Planar 9 and I wouldn't sell it for any money. I still love the sound of vinyl!
