For example, a lot of people follow the ten commandments, most of which are the same as laws. YOu know, be good because God is watching and if you're bad you go to hell or whatever.

Only patriarchal religion, which is designed to reinforce an hierarchial form of government that concentrates power into the hands of an elite class of rulers and priests, while convincing the masses who suffer under their rule that they will receive their reward in the afterlife.

My religion, Dianic Wicce, does not scare people into doing anything. It's a celebration of life. No guilt, no sin, just knowing that all life is connected, that everything you do comes back to you, and it is entirely possible for every being on the planet to live in peace, prosperity, and harmony with Nature if we'll just work together.

You know there are many different religions. In some cases what you mention is true. In fact, in history, we find that the fear of the unknown has been used by few to have control over many, so they will obey society's rules... "their society". But there is true religion as well, which isn't about society's rules, but mostly different from what society mostly accepts as normal. Religion (true religion) simply is your tool to reach out to God. If you don't want God, you don't need religion.

Do you actually believe our society today is following the 10 Commandments? We are so far from the 10 Commandments today. Our society today basically follows the opposite of the 10 Commandments. So my answer would have to be, no......but I believe if you don't follow Jesus Christ, you will not have a very peaceful eternity.

The ten commandments are fine, It's the stories of the devil created in the new testament that are intended to scare people, apparently just burning people alive wasn't enough!!

I think it used to be a scare tactic to keep people in a religious society in line and unquestioning.

Now it does the same, only religion keeps people within their religion, not society's rules.

No, that is not it at all. I want to be good. I want to love others and treat them as I would like to be treated.
You are WAY wrong when you say, "Be good because God is watching, and if you're bad, you go to hell."

You have no idea what Christianity is really like if you think that.

WAY WRONG!!

I did at one point because it made sense, but my faith prevailed and then I realized that our laws are just copycatting something that already existed to work to there advantage.
