Loss of habit to development is the greatest threat to biodiversity. I use the word "habitat" because deforestation just speaks to the loss of a forest habitat. Destruction of wetlands, upland scrub, beaches, etc. also results in loss of habitat.

The consequences of loss of biodiversity would include the possibility that we might lose the opportunity to discover future sources of medicines. Are there plants out in a jungle somewhere that contain chemicals that might be the cure to cancer that will be lost to deforestation? Possibly.
