During rough times, people need something to fall back on and rely on. It's a weakness, really, but not one that you can really help or say is bad unless you want to be hypocritical, because we all need something in a time of crisis. However, I don't think it's very wise to do--if you want to gain the strength and learn the lesson from a time of conflict or trauma, you should rely on yourself and those around you. Otherwise, you're really cheating yourself out of some life lessons and personal strength. If you are going to find God, find him when you can think hard on it and when you're ready.

The answer is simply fear, people feel vulnerable and are searching for any kind of protection possible. So they reach out to God in what ever form as protector and the antidote to there fear.

Because as the phrase goes, "it's the opiate of the people." It helps reduce the fear and uncertainty that goes with tribulation. At least, it seems to at the time.
