Martin Luther addressed some corruption in the Church concerning what he viewed as the sale of indulgences.
Indulgences are recognitions of penance here on earth, substituting for some of the just punishment due for sins already forgiven.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indulgence
Indulgences were sometimes awarded in response to charitable donations, which at least looked like they were for sale. Subsequently, the Council of Trent undertook some reforms that prevented any sale of indulgences.
Where Martin Luther went wrong is in rejecting the authority of the Church Jesus authorized and empowered in interpreting scriptures. Luther replaced the Church with an unbiblical doctrine of "sola scriptura."
Sola scriptura argued that only scripture, and not sacred Tradition, could be used to interpret the teachings of Christianity. By implication, every Christian believer could decide for himself what the scriptures mean.

As a consequence, more than 30,000 denominations splintered Christianity, all with their private sola scriptura readings, many of which are completely at odds with the ancient texts.

Bruce

Because the Church at the time was granting indulgences for gifts of money to the church (they've since condemned the practice). This looked suspiciously like the universally condemned practice of buying one's salvation, and also created a conflict of interest since the Church was profiting from the granting of indulgences.
Luther attacked this abuse on three fronts:
1. By challenging the Church's power to grant indulgences in the first place;
2. By raising doubts as to whether the need for further personal sanctification necessarily separates us from God after death, and arguing that instead, Christ's righteousness covers us just as Israel's high priest could enter the Holy of Holies when covered in the priestly garments; and
3. By arguing that the Roman Catholic hierarchy does not have a monopoly on the Office of the Keys.
All three claims are arguable on scriptural grounds. For that reason, many of us believe that Martin Luther was indeed right.

It provided the opportunity for the German princes to weaken the power of the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Not only did this weaken his power, but it weakened the power of the Roman Church in Germany. A lot of money was being pumped into Rome by way of Germany...to give you an example: the current St. Peter's Basilica in Rome was funded by the many indulgences sold by the Church in Germany (and throughout Christendom).

I'd say he was right as far as wanting to initiate reform; he was wrong in leaving the Church. He was a Catholic priest for crying out loud. He understood the Church's authority and foundation with Christ better than anyone. I think his mistake was he relied on himself instead of God, and that's where he went wrong.

Yes. At the time of the reformation the Catholic church had allowed corruption in. It was teaching unbiblical practices and doing things that were just plain wrong. Something had to be done and the reformation was it. I truly believe the reformation was caused by God. That He caused it in order to save His church. To save that remnant that was still faithful to Him. A side effect of the reformation was to force the Catholic church to turn from her sin and return to Biblical practices, although I do not believe they have still gotten rid of everything they need to.

I could give you a good answer, but why be concerned about things like that? Do you have a good relationship with God? Are you growing closer to what he wants you to be? Aren't these issues more important?
