So I've just received a Samsung HD850 player. I hooked it up to my HD TV via a HDMI connection, and made sure it was set to 1080i on the setup. Ran a standard DVD, and I found the same problem; despite being HDMI it produced an image probably worse than my XBOX 360 connected with a HD component. Huge macro blocks around moving people, quite severe blurred images, I'm talking semi image break-up in some parts!! It does it for some DVD's but not for others.
Any idea as to what is going wrong? I refuse to believe that any DVD should not give a clear picture on a supposedly HD upscaling DVD player.

You did not say so - but is your TV an LCD?

These have a known problem with up-converting DVD players. One of the better players known as the "Oppo" recommends NOT using their DVD players on LCD screens.

Here is the problem: The player breaks the image into blocks to up-convert. The LCD TVs also does some processing and when both devices break things at the same point - it creates the macroblocking you are seeing.

There are (were) 3 (4) styles of disc gamers. established DVD; Least severe def Upconverting DVD, medium. makes use of HDMI cable to attach to hidef television. BluRay, optimal def. Ditto HD DVD turned right into a competing format V/ BluRay, which failed, and isn't any longer supported. each body of those can play something further down the def record, so a BluRay participant can play any DVD, and an upconverting DVD participant, ditto.

Try changing the resolution to 720p instead of 1080i. Progressive looks much better than interlaced with fast moving visuals like sports and gaming.
