In my understanding, many Jews settled in Turkey after the Spanish Inquisition of 1492 as a result of the relatively friendly relationship Turkey had with the Jews at that time.

Jews started heading there even before the Spanish inquisition. In 1391 already pogroms, massacres and torturings were taking place. However after 1492 the was the majority of Jews fled to the ottoman empire (Turkey) It was a safe place to live. To enter was relatively easy (pay a poll tax and verbally state the superiority of Islam, which of course are empty words for another religion) Times were fairly good there (in comparison to turbulent times of course, theres always anti semitism existing) Jews saw the security there and some came from Germany and other places (however the majority were sephardim,or, Jews from Spain and Portugal)

This is a big guess, but I'm thinking it occurred with the Spanish expulsion of Muslims and Jews in 1492.
