Be very dramatic like if they didn't get you a new mattress they would cause you to live with a painful back all of your life.
haha.
also just tell them that it's old & that the quality is not near as good as it was back when your mom had it & that a better mattress means better sleep=better mood=better life! ha
hope it helped =]

Your main point should be health concerns.
-Allergies- Matresses accumulate dust mites over the years and are one of the main causes of allergies. Ever woken up with a stuffy nose and it went away a few hours later? Dust Mites!!!
-Trouble Waking up- When you toss and turn because you can't get comfortable you are disrupting your sleep cycle which makes it hard for you to wake up in the normal 7-9 hours (depending on age)
-Memory- While you are sleeping is when your brain takes everything you learned during the day and puts it from short term to long term. Students that don't get the deep sleep they require have a harder time remembering things because their brain didn't have the appropriate time to store the information.
-Bone issues- Your back and neck are very important. Getting out of alignment because the muscles can't relax over night is a major cause of back, neck, leg, arm and foot problems. (when your back or neck gets out of wack everything below it can suffer) While you are sleeping is the only time your neck really gets to rest so having an appropriate pillow as well as a good mattress is the key to letting your body do what it need to do while you sleep; RELAX.
-Bodies Change over time- A mattress becomes broken in over time based on the person(s) who sleep in it most. Their Height and weight and and large family pets or playing on the bed can have a dramatic effect.
-Proper Matress Care- Also a mattress should be rotated and flipped. If the Mattress was not rotated every 3 months and or flipped every 6 months it's life span may be sorter due to a lack of care. A mattress will only last between 8-10 years.
"Once a mattress no longer feels supportive and instead seems to contribute to body pain or stiffness, it should be replaced. Some symptoms of a broken or worn out mattress include springs which can be felt poking through the upholstery layer, visible permanent sagging or deformity, lumpiness, and excessive squeaking." (wikipedia)
Hopefully that helps

Perhaps if you complain about your back hurting and want to go to the dr, if it hurts that bad, they will think again about buying you a new mattress or maybe they just can't afford it right now, it's so close to Christmas but then again, you might be able to get some good deals after Christmas.

I suppose you've tried turning it through all possible permutations just in case there's a comfortable spot.
Mattresses ain't cheap, except the ratty ones that aren't worth it so you basically have to justify the expense.
Perhaps the phrase 'bag of spanners' in describing what it's like to sleep on might help.

Use this question: what is more important...my back or your old mattress?
If it's a money thing.....go buy an air mattress that many people buy for camping. That's what I always use.......and my back does better on them than a standard made one. You can put as much air into them as you Need for your back.

Stress the fact that 70% of our life is spent sleeping - it is vital to our well-being and how we react throughout the day. Also, as someone else stated, mattresses get very dirty throughout the years by being filled with the feces of dust mites, not the mites themselves and this contributes big time to illness and allergies. Hope this helps!

i thought i got it bad. i really hope you dont live with them to have to write that letter..... but even if you do.....
make sure that you include that insurance rates are going up especially for the dr visit and the medicine and because of this bad mattress, you may injure your back or neck sleeping on it and it may give you bad migranes. just bring up something about more money and insurance.
you could even discuss splitting the cost or giving it to you as a christmas present.

Dear Mom and Dad,
My matress is killing me (literally). If I do not recieve a new matress I will have temper tantrums, refuse to talk to you, join a gang, use drugs, become a prostitute, and if these dont convince you I will also commit suicide.
Scratch that- the first thing I'll do is call child abuse and tell them that you make me sleep in the garage!
LOL

Say this. Mom, my back hurts because of the springs that are going in the position wrongly to my back. I'm always going to school in a bad mood sometimes. I really need a new mattress. I'll do anything: pay half for it, good grades, any thing, even as a Christmas present maybe. Please, please, please!
