Everything in nature is cyclic, so my suspicion is that intelligence is endemic to the universe, and at this point in time it's simply being expressed (at least on Earth) through walking, talking hominids. Probably the future we're progressing towards is one of non-corporeal existence (pure thought), where we actually merge with the universe at the quantum level, and join by condensing down to an infinite point, at which point we'll expand violently, and start all over again.
