Very expensive to maintain. These vehicles are overly complicated and can develop problems you're not likely to see in other vehicles. Do your research using the various consumer publications, talking to other owners, etc. Make sure you are using a reputable and reliable dealer. they vary greatly in customer service and overall competence. Personally, I wouldn't have any Volvo newer than the 940 series.

these are reliable, safe, and are excellent snow cars, they have some [limited] off road capability.
you must decide weather you need an all season car or a real truck, the volvo will get you and family up the path to "unca lee's" cabin even in snow but should you wish to leave the path a more substantial "truck" will be needed.
note:in general these "crossover" type cars[regardless of who makes it]
neither handle all that well [as compared to a regular car] nor have the ground clearance, low range transfer case, or general toughness required of a true four wheel drive truck.
remember if you are caught short in the wild you are alone.

Volvo makes one of the most dependable and safest cars on the road. almost all European vehicles have a good measure of comfortable ride and performance.
the only thing you'll find unpleasant is the availability and price of parts should you need them
but seeing how it's new you shouldn't be too concerned about that only thing i can recommend is to find out how odd the tire size is if they are an unusual size you'll find that replacing them will be very costly
good luck
