Hey Ranchgirl,

Lots of posts on here about what to do, depends on your budget and tastes! On being safe it's been said many times - common sense is the key. Don't flash cash (keep a little in a separate pocket for small purchases) or expensive jewelry if you can help it. Act confident as you walk - I know this one may not be popular but it really is in the body language. You can always see people who are tentative or confused in NYC as there is usually a rush on some direction. Being noticed sets you apart and subsequently attracts attention that may be unwanted.
There are lots of scams from people who seem really nice or in need so although telling people to be skeptical of others is generally bad advice it's probably a decent bit of advice seeing as though you live n a ranch and may not be familiar with NYC (if you are then I apologize).
Map out your routes before hand and always look for a commuter type for directions if you need them.
On the whole NY'ers are friendly and helpful so enjoy and have a good time.

There are any number of things to do in Manhattan - I presume that is where you intend going - it depends on what you consider as enjoyable. As an FYI, there is a Broadway theater strike on but off-Broadway shows are on and there is a wide variety available. Try going to the Top of the Rock (the top of Rockefeller Center) where you can enjoy spectacular views (360 degrees) of Manhattan and beyond. The way to stay safe is to avoid some of the lonelier parts (above 96th street) after dark but in general New York is one of the safest big cities in the world. Avoid going to night clubs alone but there are many places in the Village that are safe (particularly near NYU) to hang out. Enjoy yourself!

Unfortunately Broadway is shut down, but that's one of the nicest things to do. Buy a copy of Time Out New York magazine. It lists A LOT of great things to do in the City.
