I have never photographed any hay, but I do have a few shots of corn.

If Ansel Adams is a 10 and a drunk guy taking shots on his cell phone is a 1 then I'd say I'm a 6, I've a lot still to learn but I'm no beginner. I do plan to reach an 8 or 9.
It seems from the answers of those that made shots of hay did so while the sun shone.

Probably about a 7. I'm better than many, if not most, amateurs, but certainly a long way shy of a professional.
I don't know how much better I'll get. I really need to learn a lot more about lighting control, especially flash. Flash/studio lighting is probably my weakest area. If I learned how to do that well, I'd up my score by a whole point. I consider it a serious deficiency in my skills.

Well, for starters, I've only photographed hay 2--maybe 3--times. When it comes to hay, though, I think I rate a 9.5.
Seriously, though, I think I'm at about a 5, but I'm improving and doing all I can to improve.

The few, rare, times I've taken photos of hay, I think I've hit, about, three exposures out of five with satisfactory results.
The two I missed were because I picked a bad time to take the shots, with the sun almost directly overhead. Early morning, or late afternoon sun would have lent itself, nicely, to the grass' natural warm coloration.

Personally I think I am okay. I take more than enough photos that I am happy with most of them.
It is not my 9-5 job, but I am paid to do most of them--so this is not a bad thing.

Right around 4, there is always room for improvement though, so I learn along with the rest.

I would say I'm maybe mediocre/ average, but I predict that digital technology will improve to the point where, with no knowledge or effort, I will become much better than Ansel Adams.
