My fiance and I are having an outdoor ceremony next June. A pastor is marrying us, however, we dont want to focus too much on religion. Aside from the unity candle, what other special ideas could we incorporate for unity? Thanks!

Sand, wine, or petals are the only alternatives I've heard of.
The wine works best if you pick a dark red and a white wine, then when you mix you get a rose colored. You could also do the same idea with water with a bit of food coloring in it.

Petals-take rose petals of 2 different colors and mix them. The hard part is you have to use a large bowl and lightly sprinkle them in so that they don't stay separate in a layer of each color.

Those are the only ones I've heard of. I didn't want a very religious ceremony either, but the unity candle isn't that religious--just talk to the pastor on what he says and how you don't want him to be too religious. He should respect your beliefs.

There are those that have been suggested, the sand, candle, wine. Usually it's a red wine & a white wine poured together to make a rose` wine; then rose` is served at the reception.
Some are tailoring the Pagan handfasting & some are even doing the Jewish breaking of the glass. There's broom & sword jumping, a unity bouquet, unity wreath, flower & vessel, rose, salt (similar to the sand), and many more. Speak to your minister about this. Remember, too much leaves your guests more dazed than impressed.

Our minister gave us a list of different ceremony's we could do when we told him that we want a nondenominational wedding!

There is the sand ceremony as listed above, wine ceremony (were you drink sweet wine and bitter wine to resemble life and becoming one), there is also the rose ceremony (where you exchange flowers it tells about life starts, changes, and how it ends) I personally am also having a beach wedding so I am thinking about the sand ceremony!

Best Wishes and good luck to you on your special day!!

My husband and I had a sand ceremony. We found some information on line regarding a sand ceremony and presented the information to the pastor. He then presented us with a final draft with his and our interpretations included. For the ceremony, we each had our individual color of sand and our families each had a color. We had my family as the base color, we each poured our own color and then his family was on top of ours. Finally, we all mixed the colors together to signify one large family. It worked great!

Many African Americans jump the broom. It really is something moving after lighting the unity candle. Here is a note about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumping_the_broom

I expect that if you don't have African American heritage it would be interesting to your guests.

How about a sand ceremony where you each have your own color of sand and pour them into a pretty vase and they mix and "unite". This way you always have something from your wedding for your mantle.

there's also a ribbon tying ceremony and one where your wrists are tied with a cord - literally tying the knot. That one should be available on theknot.com

Best wishes
