One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?" "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these." (NIV, Mark 12:28-31).

(Galatians 6:2) which is to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40).

Jesus answered this question by reminding the asker of an Old Testament passage: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and might. The second is Love your neighbor as yourself.

The prayer, "The Shema" said daily by Jews, says it all: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all you mind and with all your strength." Jesus added to the prayer by saying: "and your neighbor as yourself."

" I am the Lord your God, you shall not have strange Gods before me." This is his number one law because he knows what is best for our salvation. Trust Him.

The principle most often mentioned in the New Testament is the 'brotherhood of man', our obligation to watch out for one another, to take care of one another.
In the Old Testament, this is the second most mentioned principle. The first is idolatry.
