I just got my 1st ear piercing on Sunday at Piercing Pagoda. Monday night, my ears began to turn a reddish color. I thought it was no big deal, cuz after all, it was my first piercing. Then, on Tuesday, it was red and it began to get all puffy, then finally it's now all bumpy and red and puffy. I'm scared, cuz it's on both of my ears. I think it's because the earrings that I'm wearing are causing an allergic reaction to my ears. I asked the nurse at my school what was wrong, and she just told me to keep on cleaning it with rubbing alcohol and it's still not gone! I'm really scared that I'm gonna lose both of my ears. My mom already took out my earrings, cuz she didn't want me to get really infected. She just took them out today. I've been wearing my earrings for only about 4 days, and I have them taken out. Both of my ears are still bumpy, pimple-like, kinda puffy and red. I keep on cleaning them like I'm supposed to, so any suggestions on what I should do?
If you could help me, thxs!

Well, the earrings that I have are 14k gold earrings, I think?

I don't really know if my earrings are gold or not.
It just says 14k on the box that they gave me.

Ohkay, I get all the stuff bout wearing different earrings that I won't get allergic to. All I need to find out is how to heal my ears. So, do you guys know any info on that?

Thanks for reassuring me guys, but I kinda need more help on what to do. Remember, I just got them pierced and got them taken out. I can't put in another earring, cuz the hole is too small. I only had my earrings on for 4 days, until I got them taken out.

Sounds like you could be allergic to gold, or more likely, the posts are made of a different metal than the rest of the earring because 14K gold can be little too soft for posts.

Treat the allergy with cortisone cream, and take a benedryl at bedtime.

Look for earrings labeled as hypoallergenic - they usually have stainless steel or polycarbonate posts.

Allergic Reaction To Earrings

I agree with the rest I always get 14K earrings, never anything else because of the irritation. Have you used the solution for newly pierced ears? I found that the healing solution that Claire's sells is the same ingredient found in Band-Aid, cleansing and infection foam. I LOVE this! You can pump the foam both on the front and back of the piercing and it melts in the spots it needs to get. I also, and I have quite a few piercings use Neosporin on a Q-Tip to keep the area moisturized and the earring is able to turn freely after the application. If your mom has removed the earrings, it's her call whether you should put them back in, but I would definitely go back and make sure it's a 14K pair. Although I'm not sure your mom will be able to get an earring through your hole now. If not, you only option is a doctor and let the holes close up. Sorry.

Either you are allergic to the gold or whatever is mixed with the gold, or you did not look after them properly when you first got them. You could try sterling silver ones.

If the infection gets too bad, you can get a course of antibiotics from your doctor.

No, you will not loose your ears.

I have sensitive ears too. You can't wear anything made with nickle or low-quality metals. Stick with high quality gold or surgical steel titanium earrings. Also look for earrings that specify that they are "hypoallergenic" or for "sensitive ears".
If you are allergic to 14k than go with 18k gold.

You should get solid gold earrings put in as soon as you can so the hole doesn't heal up.
Or you will have to re pierce them.
Just relax, it will prob be gone in a few days. If not, go see a doc.

get that liquid stuff (don't remember the name of it) that they sell where ever you get ears pierced. works great to stop allergic reactions. I use it when I wear cheap ear rings to stop the pain, itch and reddness.

Have you been using any lubricant at the piercing site? They generally use metals that are not especially irritating to the site. Try a triple antibiotic cream or go to your MD
