My Boyfriend and I have been together for about 3 years and lived together for the last year, recently we have been talking about getting engaged and starting a family next year (I am 24 and he is 28) He seems really keen on starting a family and would do it now if I would let him. I want to be engaged first and would like it to be soon, I have been talking about us going ring shopping and he says yes, but just doesn't seem all that keen? Any ideas why?

It could be he is going to surprise you with something, and you wanting one now could be a problem. I think you should ask again and talk about how you two would have to pick out a nice ring together. You don't need to spend every dime on one but you should pick one you both liked. If he hems and haws about it let it go for awhile.

I think you are both going about things in the wrong direction, you get engaged first, then married, then have a baby together. Since when is okay to do things in a different order? At 24 and 28 you should have more sense than to do it any other way -- give the child two parents together and a sense of stability.

Stop talking about it. See what he does. He may not want to get married. Talking about it and doing it are two different things. He may think he is too young to get married. He may think that since you guys are living together that that is good enough...the same as being married. Have an honest conversation with him, but don't be surprised if he doesn't want to. The decision you then will have to make is whether or not you want to stay with someone who doesn't have the same values as you.
