Bit worried that the doctor gave you diazepam even once! It is very addictive and little use for anxiety anyway. Has your GP carried out any investigations to exclude physical pathology?

Minimum requirement would be thyroid function and a full blood count and a resting ECG. Ideally a 24 hour ambulatory ECG or a cardio-memo should be carried out as well.

Only when pathology has been excluded can treatment options be safely looked at.

You could try herbal products, but I doubt their efficiency. What causes the palpitations? stress? Propanolol is a betablocker, is indeed a good choice, but it works only 6-8 hours, and can cause problems with the airways, or others (like your nightmares) (it is an old non-selective beta blocker, meaning it works on the heart, but also on other organs). Valium is indeed not the solution. There are also selective beta blockers (only working on heart rythm), like bisoprolol for example. They work 24-26 hours, and don't cause the nightmares you have. maybe a better choice.... Ask your doc for a selective betablocker, problem solved with one pill a day (what's the cause again? can you do something about that?)

suffered from them for years, been given various drugs from beta blockers to tranqs, zanax etc. nothing worked, at one time i missed every other heart beat or double beat-ed, (if that makes sense) for a year. I,m 47 now, so over twenty years of it, 2 years ago I stopped smoking and cut down on caffeine particular cola, loved vodka and coke. since then, as i have got fitter the palpitations have improved greatly. Mine were so bad i twice had a camera put into my heart to see what was going on. From getting them every day , i now feel unlucky if i get any once a week. Don't go mad on exercise and check what you eat and drink in relation to your episodes and it will make a big difference. Good luck as i know this is not treated that seriously but does affect your life greatly. PS. I spent a fortune on herbal remedies, hypnosis, hypnotherapy, aroma therapy etc, don't bother.

I have had palpitations off and on for years.
My doctor prescribed Nadolol. It is a beta blocker.
Nadolol also helps my borderline hypertension.
Most of the time it keeps me from feeling that sensation of my heart beat. It also slows down my heart rate.
Maybe this could be a consideration for you.
Best Wishes and I hope you feel better.

Some thyroid disorders can be cured, but many require lifetime treatment. Learn here https://tr.im/HsAb2
For example, sometimes early stage thyroid cancer can be cured by surgery to remove the thyroid gland, but you will need to take thyroid hormone medication afterwards for the rest of your life. Goiters can also be surgically removed and do not always recur after surgery. In most cases, thyroid disorders need treatment over a lifetime. However, with treatment most people with thyroid disorders can live normal, healthy lives.

One of the most effective things that your body produces is your breath. Find yourself a settled place, a chair, bed, floor, and place your hands palms up on your lap. Take 3 large cleansing breaths, in through your nose and out through you mouth. From there try to pace yourself into what they call "circle breathing" where you breathe in through your nose and out through you mouth in a rhythmic style. This may not work always although it is very helpful as it allows oxygen to flow to your heart and brain. With control comes relief. In my opinion. Good Luck
