Damn...chill out folks...she was only asking a question. You guys acting like a bunch of haters. I think anyone who work for the VA hospital deserves some privalges. Besides, she works for a military hospital, I think thats just as good working for the arm force or atleast the same privalges as a dependant.

Anyway, when I'm at the exchange, I see contractors buying stuff with their CAC cards. So if I were you, you should ask first before purchasing...doesnt hurt to ask.

RE:
I have a Department of Defense CAC card. Would I be able to get a military discount if I presented that?

No, you can't receive a military discount for being a department of defense employee. Although the CAC cards do look alot alike, most places on base can tell the difference mostly because the civilian id's don't have rank on them like the military ones do. If I remember correctly, the only places on base that a DOD civilian is allowed to shop is the Post Exchange and the 7 day store. You can't shop at the commissary or the base gas station. Anywhere off base, no you can't get a discount. If you do, you could be charged with impersonating military personnel which is a punishable offense.

Yes it's wrong. The military discount offered by a variety of stores and businesses is intended as a benefit for men and women who have sacrificed in the defense of their country. I've been in the Navy for a long time as was my father. I work around a number of great government civilians as well. We need the support you provide but don't pretend what you do is the same as what we do. by the same token, honestly ask the business if they extend the benefit to DoD civilians. Most hotels for instance do. Are you a vet or retired military? Stores may also extend the benefit to you. But be honest.

desertvi... "Sure. Take it to some convenience store. Let that semitic looking fellow behind the counter photograph it with his cell phone so he can make a copy later on. CAC means Controlled Access Card! It appears to me you missed that point in your security briefing."

it's also your id card and you have to show just about everywhere. so what would the difference be in showing it to get a discount.

You have to be military to get a "military discount", although some establishments extend that to prior service veterans or retired military. Being in the Department of Defense as a civilian doesn't mean you're in the military any more than working for the FAA makes you a pilot.

Probably...probably not. If i recall correctly civilian CAC cards have a green block saying "CIVILIAN" but if the person is not paying too much attention you may get away with it. But thats up to you if you want to request a discount not really meant for you.

No those who actually give Military Discounts with proof want Active duty Members not DOD.. your id cards states DOD Civilian.

It really depends on what kind of DoD CAC it is. What organization are you affiliated with? Either way, most civilians probably wont know the difference, and you'll get it anyway.
