I get killed at this course that is up and down throughout. The front is all going downhill and of course the back is going uphill!

From 7 iron to 3 wood, I'm faced with challenging shots and I have issues topping the ball in both cases!

It is common to top the ball in a downhill lie, but more about that later.
On an uphill slope, you want to make sure that you take a little more club and if you want, you can grip the club a little lower. Now it is important to drop a little more weight on the back foot and drop your right shoulder a little more thus your shoulders will be aligned with the slope which will allow you to swing more freely. If you so desire you can put the ball a little more forward in your stance, but make sure that you aim more to the right because this will tend to draw the ball for you. Because you said you're topping the ball it leads me to believe that you're off balance or you straighten your leading foot which causes you to become taller.

On downhill lies, put the ball back in your stance, it will come out a bit flatter and longer than usual. Drop your left shoulder and make sure you make your swing more compact.

You can practice these shots on the range by using a flat board with a pivot point underneath and thus create an uphill or downhill lie. Try it next time you hit the range and you'll get confident in trying those out when you play.
Good luck & happy golfing

for a downhill lie try setting the ball back in your stance and choking up til comfortable enough for a good swing, and make sure to compensate for lost loft in your club selection. uphill shots will produce more spin and less roll from incline. add a club and put it in normal-to-towards the front. If your topping the ball alot. Try to stay looking at the same spot where the ball was after impact for a moment. ex. til your halfway on your upswing maybe.

I agree with Al H and Speedstar. But I would add one of the best tips I ever got for both up and down hill lies......keep your shoulders parallel to the slope of the hill so the swing is more like a regular swing. I have found this works very well and it even works for pitches and chips.

just like al h said, ball back in your stance on a down hill shot, and forward in your stance on a up hill shot....let your main concerin on the down hill shot is to maintain your posture, dont lift your head or body, stay low.....the down hill is alot harder that the up hill.
