If you want a wedding, there are many way to go about it inexpensively. Invite less guests, do a buffet instead of a seated meal, make as many things as you can for your wedding or have help (flowers, centerpieces, invitations, etc).
The best advice I can give you is research, research, research. I had over a year to plan our wedding, so I was able to look at different venues and service providers. This ended up saving me a lot of money in the long run.
Best of luck Hun!

You don't have to spend that much. Just figure out what wedding things are most important to you, a white dress, a pretty cake, the food, whatever and focus the money on that. Then just do something modest and tasteful for everything else and invite only the people who really count. If you really want a wedding, you should do it or you'll regret it. There are lots of ways to do it without spending a fortune.

If you want a small wedding, that's great! That's a money saver on it's own. I made the mistake of over-researching and freaking myself out because I want 200 guests. For me, that leaves a backyard reception out, but if you're going small, than you can do it. Have a friend bbq, do a pot luck, have the camera happy relative or friend be the photographer, the skies the limit! I've been to a couple weddings like that and they're really nice, and since they're intimate they're really fun! You can also do what my mom did when she married my step dad and go out of town to a little chapel with 10 guests. They're going to have a big party later for everyone else.

There's a difference between the wedding as a celebration and the formality of a marriage. Whether you use a JOP or (depending on your location) local clergy, if you can separate the paperwork from the ceremony, it can be smoother and simpler. I was married in another country (Scotland, highly recommend it), and we finished our paperwork at the wedding. Since there were only 6 of us there (plus the photogs), it was no problem. Friends who have separated the paperwork from the ceremony suggest doing the paperwork beforehand, then holding the ceremony. Yes, it means you're already married when you hold the wedding, but no one else need know. It may take the stress off you to know that you and your partner are already together regardless of what happens at the ceremony.
In either case, congratulations and best of luck (and weather)!

What about a destination wedding? The Ernest Hemingway house has pretty affordable packages ranging from $300-$1500 for the set-up, officiant, music, flowers champagne etc...
You could select a small handful out people you'd want who might be willing to travel and make it a nice experience for you guys and then linger around for a couple more days for a honeymoon.
You could also get married on a boat, the captain is authorized to perform ceremonies.

Go with a small wedding. There are lots of ways to save money, by doing things yourself. You have a year to plan and save money...go for it. It will be fun. If you dont have a wedding you will regret it and be one of these ladies on here saying "I didnt get the wedding I wanted is it ok to have another wedding 2 years later?"

Have your small wedding. If you really do want a wedding DO NOT go to a JP... I am planning my wedding right now and the most expensive part is going to be my dress... If you are a member of a small church or personal church, they might let you have it there for free... If not, have it in a backyard somewhere.... Or at a state park....

I just got married in August, and this site was excellent for wedding planning. They also have a lot of other free, printable checklists that are super helpful. Also this site already has a directory of related resources, including a free wedding planner.

You could have a small outdoor wedding and then invite everyone to a reception picnic. You don't have to spend a lot to make a beautiful day for yourself.

Try to have a simple party in ways that won't break your budget. If you can do it in less than a year while it is still usually warm outside, go to a park and throw a picnic/BBQ.
A wedding is really about the partying and celebrating with your friends/family.
