I may be biased, but I recommend Corgi's. I have two and they are great with kids.
They love to play with the neighborhood kids and my nephews.
I am expecting my first baby and have no fears of having the baby right with the dogs.
Corgi's weigh between 20 - 30 lbs and are great dogs.
Good luck

Here is the deal. Do not get a puppy! It will be like your kids and trying to learn the ways of life. Bouncing around and will be all over your little kids. Besides that their teeth are like needles and they will be bitting just in fun. Try and find a little older dog.
My Pit Bull and Beagle are great with kids. The pit is a medium sized dog at 55 lbs, known as the "Nanny Dog" as they are so great with kids and followers my one year old grandson everywhere. A beagle is around 25-30 lbs. Mine has no problem with my grandson pulling on his big ears and is great with him.
In my opinion a bit bigger dog is better. A small dog could be hurt by the kids and it is likely to snap or bite. I do not trust my Chi/Rat Terrier around small kids because he will snap if they hurt him.
I would suggest a medium sized dog for kids. I mentioned a Beagle, but mine is a mutant and close to 40 lbs, way bigger than he should be, kids can't hurt him.
OK, here is where you are going to think I am crazy. The best dog you can get that is people friendly and is the greatest with children is an American Pit Bull Terrier. I have had mine, when my daughter brought my one month grandson and sat him on the floor on in his carrier, lay bye him for an hour. She would not leave his side. He is a year old now and the Pit and the Beagle play with him all the time. The Pit puppy will knock him over once as she is a puppy and rambunctious.
My Pit is a very ill mannered dog and jumps on everyone that come into the house, except children. She loves all kids. Well she loves everyone.

Most smaller breeds will be too rough with the 3 month old or not tolerant enough with the 5 year olds pulling of their ears/tail/fur

Look into the herding breeds, they tend to be better with young kids pulling on them and a corgi might be just the size you want. If you can go to a dog show and try and talk to as many breeders as you can, if you can't go to a dog show still try and find local breeders who show dogs, they tend to know more about the breed than the average back yard breeder. Ask for their advice and if you find a breed you like ask the breeder if they have any older dogs they'd be willing to sell as pets, or find a rescue group that works with that breed and try and get a dog that is at least 2 years old, you don't want to be training a puppy with a baby in the house

I'd say a pug. They're affectionate, smart, and they don't bark too much. You can't take a pug on a walk for too long, because of their smushes noses. It makes it harder for them to breath, and may lead to respiratory problems (Its also difficult to housebreak pugs). But they do have quite a few health problems (or so I'v read), so if you don't want a large vet bill, I'd go with an italian greyhound.

Italian Greyhound's don't bite (or hardley ever), they're small, they don't shed much, and they're affectionate. The only thing is, you need a good-sized backyard. (Because they were bred down from greyhounds, they need lots of exercise).

If you don't have time to excercise a dog much, get a pomeranian or a chinese crested. They are both lightweight, loving, and smart. They only need about a 20 minute walk each day. If you want something that sheds a bit less, you should get a dachshund.

Dachshunds are great dogs, smart, affectionate, and have smooth coat. They're great with small children, but they do tend to bark quite a bit. They need about 4, 10 minute walks a day. So the decision's up to you. But all these dogs are a good choice!!

Good luck!!

With two young children, a dog at least 20 pounds would be best. There are many small dogs that are about 20 pounds. Anything smaller can be too easily hurt accidently by young children. Smaller dogs and terriers tend to be more snappy as well.
Also take into consideration the energy level you can deal with in a dog, and how much time and money you want to spend on grooming. You can see different breeds at www.akc.org

I would say Pug. They are pretty excited the first couple of years but very good at being tolerant of small children. Just remember a child under 5 should never be left alone with any dog, no matter how wonderful the child or the dog.

I have a miniture weenie dog, she is very lovable and loves to chase my 2 children around the house. My son age 2 and Hershey (my dog) take naps together and play together all the time. My daughter Age 5 loves to take Hershey for walks and play with her to. I think that the younger your children are when you get a dog the better because they learn faster how to pet the dog and take care of the dog. But this is only my thoughts. Good luck!!

I use to own a boston terrier, have children under the age of five, they are great little dogs, but full of energy, we now have a Bullmastiff that is good with our kids, he has the best temperment. Never leave your dog/pup with your kid unsupervised, you just never know even with a dog labeled as a family pet, anything could happen within a second.

If oyu are just looking for a breed, I recomend pugs. They are easy to managae and don't need to be taken for walks often like most dogs, adn that is a plus especially since you probaably dont have much time with younger kids. I have a pug and he is so playful, gentle, adn very lovable. I highly recommend them. Good luck on getting a new puppy!!! They are such fun to have.

Pugs and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are both small, love people and are supposed to be good around kids (esp. Cavs)
