I just ordered an item because I got a catalog saying I was "pre-approved" for credit. It seemed a little too easy. Is there a scam here that I should be aware of? I ordered a $200 item.

I should mention I will be paying off the entire balance in the next 2-3 months, so I won't be financing long-term. I was just concerned about hidden fees or charges.

People who have no credit and want to establish, can use this type of purchase to get there. Fingerhut has a pretty high markup on their interest, giving them some cushion against those who don't make payments, or order without ever paying.

It's not a scam, but their credit is grossly overpriced. They've been around for many decades. I'm 55 and remember them when I was a kid.

Just check two things: 1. ACTUAL %APR and 2. Any MIN. total finance charges. In other words, did you agree to like 40% apr, or more? Did you agree to pay, say $50 in finance charge as a minimum no matter even if you do pay off the balance in 2-3 months?

Absolute nightmare to deal with. Their company has been run into the ground by shady business practices, dishonest salespeople and second rate products. Shop elsewhere... you will be overcharged (two payments stolen from account for ONE item) and refunds are non existent. They are nice to you until you ask them to cancel the transaction then you are volleyed from one customer service rep to another, never getting satisfaction until you hang up in frustration. But they are not finished with you. After stealing your money and lying to you they begin calling you all hours of the day and night - sometimes 5 times a day. Do yourself a favor - research them before you make any business agreement with them. You will not be sorry.

No. I've been a customer of Fingerhut before and this company is honest. Their prices are a little higher because of their easy credit policy, but they are honest!

Fingerhut's products are grossly overpriced and their interest rate is atrocious! That's why they can take the chance of selling to someone with bad credit.

More than likely, it would be fairly easy to get. I would warn you to make sure that you pay attention to the fine print. Check out what the APR (annual percentage rate) is and what fees/penalties are associated with the account. Lastly, please be sure to always pay on time. Late payments usually trigger fees & reporting to the credit bureaus.
