I assume it is one of the first cats you have had. My suggestion, because of this and how long you're gone during the day, I would get a year old cat. At that age they are past the teething stage, are potty trained, and yet still young enough to learn how you want them to act.

Hi Tanika-
I have rescued several cats 4 in fact, and 3 were adult cats, ages 2, 6, 7 when I got them and the baby was 8 wks old.
If people did not know I had the cats only a short time, they would have sworn I had them their entire lives.
I would urge you to rescue your new pets, and more important than the age, I would suggest you get at least two, so they have each other for company while you are away.
Enjoy!

Well, there are kittens and there are kittens. I somehow think of a big male cat around 4 years old, who is very people friendly. Alternatively, I think of a 6-8 month old kitten, which is not a baby but is still young enough to bond deeply with your family. A male, and a largish male. I think of a largish male, because of your 16-year-old brother. I just think of guys liking a male cat and a biggish male cat, like a Maine Coon mix (Maine Coon whole males can be 25 lbs), but I'm thinking a mix. That would make him very masculine, affable, a clown and an athlete.

Probably older, at least 3. Kittens need a lot of attention and care, they also pee all over the place and need to be trained on where to go to the bathroom. An adult cat 3+ will be able to look after itself.
Although, I got my cat when she was just a few weeks old but it was over the summer and i was home with her for the first while until she got a little bigger and then she was fine alone.

I have a 2 yr. old cat and it's like having a baby so if you aren't home 8-4 I would get a cat about 7 yrs. because the younger it is the more trouble it will cause.

I'd get one past kitten stage, so 1-5 years is about right. Your local humane society probably has a great cat you can take home, that's been fixed and vaccinated allready. I just recently went and got a year old cat to snuggle with, and she's great! They gave the papers her former owner had brought with her, telling about her temperment and personality, so I knew what to expect when I brought her home and let her settle in.

If you get a kitten, get one that's at least 10-12 weeks old. And consider getting 2. They are good company for each other, and will entertain each other while you are at work.

a kitten, a little baby you can raise it since ull be around it all the time. you can give it all the attention it needs and it can bring your family closer together. good luck. i have 4 cats and 3 dogs and love having my animals :) plus cats are very independant so dont worry too much about leaving it durin those hours as long as there is food water and a litter box.

I would get one that is about a year old. That way they arent too young and they arent old either. Just leave a toy or 2, a litter box, and thats about it...
