Why is it that you say adopt to save a pet from death, but never NEVER buy from a pet store or individual? I thought the idea was for all animals to have a chance at a good life. So if you really care about ALL pets,,,then why is it ok to leave a pet in a store to suffer,,but not ok to leave one in a shelter to suffer? I don't understand the prejudice involved here. You say it's to 'not support' BYB's, but by doing it this way, you are actually saying that if a puppy is being sold in a pet store, or someones yard, they do not deserve the same chance at life as other puppies.Ya'll say they are bad quality, but we don't know the quality at all of shelter pups either. Do puppies with a price tag deserve to be refused a good home, simply because of where/how they were born? Just curious as to how you guys feel about this?. If both shelters and byb's pups are pitiful, why does one get your support,,and the other your abandonment?

So basically what you are saying is that its worth a few dozen years of torture for the byb's few billion puppies, if the end result is eventually that they won't keep breeding? Sort of like the means don't matter as long as you get the results you want?
Where a humane persons theory is, it isn't whether you win or lose, but how you play the game......
Your theory is it isn't how you play the game, but whether you win or lose.
I guess if I can stop a dog from having 2 yrs of misery while waiting for it to arrive in the shelter,,,by getting it at the beginning of the process,,that's what I'll do.

Well, when you buy from a pet store, regardless of your reason, you encourage the puppy mills only to make more dogs to suffer. It is a vicious cycle. You buy, they breed, you buy, they breed. Basic supply and demand. By buying from backyard breeders and pet stores you are INCREASING the number of puppies that will be produced.
Did you know that backyard breeders and puppy millers contribute to a majority of what you find in shelters today? The more people impulse buy from bybs and pet stores, the more the shelters will continue to overflow and the problem only grows.
I will never buy from a pet store or a backyard breeder. I will never support their poor breeding practices. I would adopt from a shelter, because they are trying to stop this insanity... backyard breeders and pet shops are trying to profit from it. No thanx, I'm not helping them do that.
ADDED: To clarify something about backyard breeding practices... they are not always as bad as the puppy mill when it comes to the conditions that the dogs are kept, but they also do NOT do the needed genetic testing to ensure their breeding stock is not passing on genetic disorders to their litters produced. They have a "once it's sold, it's not my problem" policy and they don't care what the new owners do with their new pup. If it ends up in shelter, they don't care. Please visit this link which shows the difference between a backyard breeder and a reputable breeder to help you better understand WHY they are not a good idea to buy from. http://www.jlhweb.net/Boxermap/reputablebreeder.html
Personally, I want my breeder to do all the testing and give me the least amount of chances of any issues ever coming up with my dogs some day.

Buying a puppy from a pet store at full price not only rewards the store, puppy broker, and puppy miller, it FINANCES more litters.
That money is used to hurt more animals and that is why so many people oppose buying pups at pet stores.
Yes, those pups deserve a good life but if they don't get bought at full price they'll be bought at a "sale" price which at least deprives the store of some profit and if they end up at the shelter then they COST the store money.
I don't want to see any dogs suffer but I don't think that one pup's life is worth more than its mother's life or the lives of 5 pups in a future litter and that is what we're talking about.
When it costs a store money to have pups for sale they will stop selling them. When the brokers have no more orders they will stop going to the mills....etc.
If people continue to buy pups because they feel sorry for them they are encouraging and financing the puppy mill industry---it is creating a demand for more pups.
I know it is a bitter pill to swallow but its the reality of it.

This is a difficult question. The point of not buying from BYB and pet stores is to not support the breeding of puppies that are inferior genetically and much more prone to health problems. By buying from a BYB, you're telling them that it's ok to continue to breed puppies. They breed to make a quick buck, most often not providing the necessary veterinary care for the puppies. Reputable breeders do not make much a profit in most cases. They are out the money for showing, health/genetic testing, veterinary care, and their time. They do it because they love the breed and want to do what they can to better it. Why wouldn't you adopt a dog that is going to be put to sleep, rather than buy a dog from somebody that mass produces them for profit? I understand your point, though. I'm guilty of buying a sheltie from a BYB because I felt sorry for the little guy. Many dogs from pet stores and BYB's will end up as the shelter dogs, anyhow.

All I can say is, if you've ever met a dog rescued from a puppy-mill or a BYB dog that was overbred, you would NEVER question why we hate BYBs and puppy-mills/pet-shops.
I bet all you've ever seen are the cute little puppies that are "healthy." Many of those dogs get taken home by their owners and have diseases such as parvo, distemper, and genetic disorders. Watching families hearts break over their sick dog, which could have been prevented, is enough for me to always and forever counter the stupidity you just spewed.
EDIT: Pet store pups get shipped off to shelters when they're 6 months old. That's when they "stop being cute." Not two years.

Gosh I don't think any animal deserves NOT to have a loving home. All pets should have good homes no matter where they come from. The puppies in the shelter have a different life than those in the pet shop. Puppies in a shelter don't have people to play with them, and oohhh and awwwweee over them. They wait for someone to stop by the shelter and maybe walk by their cage. They wait patiently and desperately want someone to love them. If no one ever comes for them.....they die. A pet store puppy gets played with on a daily basis by employees. People stop in the pet store all day long and ooohh and awwweee over the cute puppies. They'll ask to hold them and play with them. It isn't a glamourous life in a petstore cage, but if someone doesn't come to take a puppy home....they don't die, they just continue to wait.
I think people should just stop breeding these high end dogs. I don't think they are bad dogs, there are just too many right now. So many people go out and buy these $1,000 dogs from the pet store, but not too many go to their animal shelter to rescue that big lab mix that is over a year old.

Puppies at pet stores are frequently from "puppy mills." Puppy mills are dirty, unkempt places where "breeders" keep female dogs for the sole purpose of breeding. WHen the female can no longer produce pups, she is usually killed.
The puppies and dogs are kept in dirty cages under questionable care.
The Humane Society has raided several of these "mills" and had them closed down, but it is a lucrative business and hard to keep constant tabs on. Where one closes down, another springs up.
By purchasing puppy mill dogs, you keep the business alive. By buying a puppy from the pet store, you are saying that the puppy mill breeder should keep turning out pups for that pet store. Likely as not, pet store pups that don't get homes, end up at the shelter, anyway.
Now then, there are breeders who are worth their weight in gold. But the best way to find them is to go their kennels and view them for yourself. If you are hellbent on having a pure-bred pup, then, at least, go to a qualified breeder. If you don't know how to find a qualified breeder, then settle for a specific breed rescue facility (German shepherd dog rescue, grayhound rescue, dachshund rescue, etc..).
Shelter dogs are not released to be re-homed, unless they have proved themselves able to get along with a potentially new family. They also get regular vet care. And, in many cases, the shelter or rescue group even checks up on the adoptive family to make sure all is going well with the animal and the new home.
**EDIT** Well, apparently, you're going to do what you're going to do. So instead of trying to justify yourself and wasting everyone's time here, go get your puppy.

Because buying from a pet store just enables more and more puppies to be bred in puppy mills. These dogs are such low - quality (I know, I have 2 from shelters) that they often don't have long life spans as it is. The owners end up paying tons of money in vet bills, and the dogs often have temperamental problems as well.
A lot of the dogs in shelter originated from pet stores and backyard breeders... so no, in saying adopt from a shelter we are NOT saying that pet store puppies don't deserve good homes. We are saying that a lot of them will end up in the shelter anyways... so instead of supporting puppy mills, wait until it ends up at a shelter and get it from there instead. Every dog deserves a home, but getting one from a pet store perpetuates the cycle and keeps one less shelter dog from getting a home.

Buy giving money for a pet you are saying yes YES please make more so we can KILL more in the shleters. You are condoning the death of millions of animals. As long as it is profitable they will continue to breed dogs in horrid conditions.
Not to worry they will always get homes petstores are not shelters that have to kill. They have already paid the puppymill byb for the pet they aren't into giving money away. SHelters have to keep space open to take in more strays and owner give ups petstores don't have to buy more if there is no space because the previous batch isn't sold.

They DO deserve good homes from responsible breeders and shelters. IF you buy a puppy from a petstore or BYB, then you are contributing to their "business" and puppy mills and they will keep going and selling sick puppies, who could eventually be bred to make even more sick puppies. If we all stopped buying from petstores then they will go out of business and there will be no more puppy mills!

If you buy a pet in a pet store, then you're supporting puppy mills. If nobody buys their puppies, then they won't have a reason to keep breeding and keeping dogs in poor conditions. Watch this video and tell me if you want to support them and keep them in business:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HM8UmHM8Uo&mode=related&search=
Puppy Millers and BYB's are just out to make a buck - They don't care about the welfare of the pups they produce, they just see $$$ signs. If you don't buy from them, they will not breed anymore - Supply and Demand, simple economics.
