I had epidural shots for a disc that was 80% ruptured, all I can say is it hurt like hell, and it did not work. They use steroids and a type of anesthesia mixed, and then you feel numb for a few hours and stay in bed there, not worth it at all, in my case. I have heard that some people have relief with a series of 3 shots. When you get to the point that the pain becomes so unbearable you will try anything, so maybe it is best to not wait till you reach that point, like I did. Best of luck, I can feel your pain, literally!

By " work " if you mean relieve pain, yes steroid epidural injections do. The pain subsides for a week or so, however it returns until another injection. Most places these injections can only be given three times in one year, but I have heard of patients with no need for more treatments.
Usually the permanent treatment for this condition is a discectomy, where the herniation is removed surgically to give more room for the nerves that are under stress.

my mam has something wrong with a disc in her back, i want to say exploded disk or leaking or something, but anyway she had tree lots of steroid injections in her back and the first one worked a bit with the pain and helped her to walk a bit easier. but it wore off and all the pain came back, the last two didnt work at all. But, if you are considering getting them as a pain management option, then like my mam said, "when you are in that much pain it is worth taking the chance". she said the injection itself didnt hurt that much, so it could very well be worth a shot
hope this helps!!

No all they do is mask the pain. While masking the pain chances are you do more damage so the pain comes back worse.
