He is now 20 months.Anytime my son sees any part of my skin he gets so excited and hugs & kisses me and he even sucks my skin.Like when I bend over and my back shows a little he runs over with a big smile and will lift my shirt and will put his face there.I breastfed my other kids and they never did this.It seems as though he wasn't ready to give up breastfeeding but it's been a while and I have no more milk.I asked him if he wanted to be breastfed and he got really excited but did not know how to suck anymore. He has been drinking from a cup since 8 months old and never took a bottle.Have you had a similar experience?I just want to know if this is normal.

He's just adjusting to a big change! Think of it from his point of view - breastfeeding, snuggling up with mummy, warm and cosy... cup, not quite so nice? Skin to skin contact is so important to children.

I stopped producing milk when I was low after my mum's death, and my first son (then 6 months) had a real problem adjusting - but opposite to you, he'd scream and scratch at my chest in the bath. I found that if I held him close for a real snuggle while he was having his bottle, he'd snuggle into me, and go all calm and sleepy - as he did when I breastfed.

We still have a 'milk' cuddle even though he's down to an evening drink only - and he's 3! It's a lovely, close time.

Maybe you could try this with your son - if it isn't convenient all the time, maybe choose one of his milk times when you can just be alone with him with no distractions?

By the way, well done for making it to 15 months - you're marvellous!

We bottle fed but I've seen this sort of thing among the moms and kids in the many playgroups we attend. It's one of his ways of showing affection for you. Breastfeeding is such a loving, intimate time for mom and baby, as I'm sure you know. He remembers the love. Perhaps you can engage him in another special time. Like maybe, reading stories with just him, or singing special songs. He'll give up on the breast in time. Just be sure he still gets the special feeling.

I don't think there is anything unusual about his behavior, some babies are just less willing to give up nursing. Its a comfort thing. He just need a lot of attention and love, like he has been given. My daughter did something similer, and is working her way through it, she was about 16 months when she was fully weaned.

My great grandmother had 13 kids and she breast fed them all until they were at least 4 or 5 YEARS (yes I said years!!!) old. She never wore a bra, and was a SAHM. She would be hanging up clothes in the yard to dry and the kids would just run up and grab a drink from under her shirt and then just continue playing in the yard.

I wouldn't say it's normal, but I'm not really surprised. Breastfeeding for that long really makes a kid attached to your body. Honestly, it's a little freakie but I'm sure he'll eventually stop.

That is the sweetest thing I have ever heard! Bless his little heart, he misses you!

No, i've never had that experience because I didn't breastfeed, but I just had to tell you how awesome that is!
