Had my wisdom teeth out in August...do not ice or heat your cheeks any more. You do not want to slow down blood flow...my cheeks were enormous the first and second day after, then they started to go down. It just takes time.

Using the ice pack in the first 12 hours following surgery helps to keep initial swelling down. Applying warm compresses following this will help to begin bringing the swelling that has occurred down.
Both my teenage daughters recently had their wisdom teeth removed and their swelling was worse on the second day. However, we followed the doctors advice of first cold then heat, and it worked.
Best wishes to a fast recovery!

No heat! It will start the bleeding up again. You need to call your dentist. The swelling should be decreasing, not increasing. You can still use an ice pack today though. It's not going to hurt anything.

use the ice if you still have swelling. heat will increase the blood flow to the area which will increase swelling. take an anti-inflammatory med like ibuprofen or aleve. if you don't notice the swelling going down in another day or two, contact your dentist in case there is infection or something.

When I got my wisdom teeth out, I used the ice a lot.
Cold reduces swelling, while moist heat increses blood flow and helps with pain. The moist helps the flesh and doesn't damage it by drying it out.

Warmth attracts blood, and it is not advisable to put it on a swelling because it will cause you to get even more swelling.. where as cold pack compress the blood allowing it not to swell so stick to Cold pack.

Ice and cold will always reduce swelling. Heat irritates the nerve endings...A little more cold will make you feel better and it won't hurt anything.
Listen to the dental assistant with the "smooth kitty"...;) She says cold, but she sounds hot! LOL!
Shame on me in your time of pain...

HELLO,
COLD IS VALUABLE THE FIRST 24 HOURS AFTER EXTRACTION. AFTERWARD, WARM, MOIST HEAT AS WELL AS NSAIDs LIKE ADVIL WILL BE USEFUL.
WHY/
THE EXTRA FLUID FROM THE SITES MUST BEGIN TO DRAIN BY THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM. ICE NOW IS FUTILE FOR THIS.

If you are still in pain, call the doctor. You shouldn't have more swelling on the second day. You may have a "dry socket" -- an infection. Call the doctor
