If she's alive find out her parents, grandparents, etc as far back and if possible where they lived. One of my ancestors was from the Balkans, but was in fact German and had immigrated to the Austrian Empire. In that case the name and location appear won't match up, which may be the case here. You also need to remember that modern Russia is smaller than it was under the Czar.

There are a few possibilities. Last names often have many alternative spellings, so you might just not have searched for the right one. Or, it might be a rare Russian last name that is just not listed where you have searched. Or, maybe it isn't Russian. It's not unusual for families to have myths about their origins that just aren't true. This usually started a few generations back when prejudice was really harsh and people felt they had to lie to survive. It could also happen because they married into a family where people didn't like the such and such nationality. Did you try just googling Kaladich and see what it comes up with?

Hmm
for starters, what documentation do you have, that shows this to be the right name/ right spelling?? Human memory is far more fallible than we like to admit, which is why you keep hearing us old times talk about documentation.
Sometimes I just slide off, and I mistyped what stuck in my head.. I used Kadavich for google search. While google said "don't you mean KATAVICH?", there was still one thing caught my eye, which is a google book entry that took me to a book mentioning Russian general named Kadavich.
True story for illustration... the typed copy of one family history said that the family was from Walesford, Va. MONTHS of trying to find it. One day, stumbling around, my eye got caught by the words HALES FORD. Could it be?? yes, it was and when I had the right county, the info poured out. If you look at old handwriting, the letters H and W are easily mistaken.
So.. find the immigrant, and find the documentation, and see where the clues point.
