There are 3 switches in my downstairs basement. One of these switches controls the light in the attic. I make one trip up to the attic and I know which switch operates the light. How is this possible?

turn on the switch that operates the basement light and one other, if you go to the attic and the light is on, then it is the second switch you turned on, if you go to the attic and the light is off, then it is the switch you left off

when you enter the basement, you turn on the light leaving 2 switches when you turn on one of the other switches, one will turn on the light in the attic so when you make the one trip if the light is on then you know it's the second switch you flipped that operates the light if the light is still off, then you know that the last switch operates the light

Well obviously you should know which switch operates the light in the attic if that's your house.

And if you just moved into that house or something, I don't know how you would be so lazy to make one trip.

I'm sorry. The answer is that you turn the lights on, trying to see which one is for the basement. Then, you turn one more on, leaving one off. If you go upstairs (not in the attic) and that light is on, you know it's the switch you left off. (Or vice versa.)

Turn on switch 1, leave it on for a little while then turn it off. Turn on switch 2 and leave it on. Leave switch 3 alone (off).

If it is switch 1, the bulb will be hot, but not on. If it is switch 2 the bulb will be ON. If is is switch 3 the bulb will be off and cold.

If you flip 1 switch, leave it on for a while, turn it off, and then flip another switch. If you go upstairs and the bulb is off, but warm, it was the first switch you flipped. If the bulb is on, it is the second switch you flipped. If the bulb is off and cold, then it is the switch you did not flip.

Turn on two switches.
After two minutes turn off one switch.
Run up to the attic.
If the light is on then you know which switch controlled it.
If the light is off and warm then you know which switch controlled it.
If the light is off and cold then you know which switch controlled it.
