My dad just went to to hospital today AND is it possible that if your a heavy drinker that it can lead to appendicitis? Because i was told that appendicitis is caused by kidneys swelling and pushing against your abdomen on a regular basis and the pressure that causes the additional sweating to the Appendics is the reason you get appendicitis...

Any other information about appendicitis would be helpful too..

Drinking can of course exacerbate many medical conditions but it cannot sole cause appendicitis. The appendix is attached to the cecum which is the first part of the ascending colon. Fecal matter can get trapped in the appendix causing the inflammation, termed appendicitis. This inflammation becomes painful and is normally followed by infection, because the body is not ridding itself of the trapped waste. Surgery for acute appendicitis is normally the course of action. Should the appendix burst, it could cause sepsis and or death. If your father is a heavy drinker I would be concerned about an abdominal aortic aneurysm. An ultrasound, CBC with differential and chem 20 panels should be done after the physical examination to make a more accurate pre-operative diagnosis.

The cause of appendicitis relates to blockage of the inside of the appendix, known as the lumen. The blockage leads to increased pressure, impaired blood flow, and inflammation. If the blockage is not treated, gangrene and rupture (breaking or tearing) of the appendix can result.
Most commonly, feces blocks the inside of the appendix. Also, bacterial or viral infections in the digestive tract can lead to swelling of lymph nodes, which squeeze the appendix and cause obstruction. This swelling of lymph nodes is known as lymphoid hyperplasia.
