Is it only our continuing understanding of what is true that actually changes? Basically truth doesn't evolve, but our comprehension of it does? A paradigm shift if you will. What are your thoughts?

Frankly, and at the risk of alot of thumbs down, It is only the lazy that believe that truth is relative, or that truth depends on what day it is. How simple to lull yourself into a sense of comfort by thinking that some things are only true for some people. How mindless to just claim it to be in the "eye of the beholder"

Truth must, by definition, be eternal and unchanged. And it is our own responsibility to discover it and declare it. The world's perception will be flawed and lazy, and the eternal beings that dwell in the world must do all they can to rise above the mediocrity that would declare truth to be fleeting. Even the linguistic concept of truth being dependant on transitional wording such as "today is weds" becomes mute when you consider that it not weds for everyone at the same time, nor is it ever weds on the moon. Those are mortal definitions given to man's imperfect tounge. Eternal truth is so much more.

You have gone to the great question, "What is truth?" That was Pontius Pilates rhetorical question when faced with the trial of Christ.
There are little truths that refer to temporal and spacial elements that are constantly changing that are very true at the time and place they occur but are not permanent. Thus, today is Wednesday and tomorrow it will not be. It is nevertheless true that on any given Wednesday, you can say that it is Wednesday and it will be true. Likewise, when you report the temperature, it is true when you say it but because you are dealing with a variable, the truth does not endure.
That is not the kind of truth that is the subject of this question.
The truths we refer to are the permanent kind, the kind that pertain to principles of life, that are the same from one generation to the next and on into eternity. Such truths never change, else they are not true at all. Thus, when we say that Jesus is the Christ, it is an eternal truth that never changes. Granted people will have differing opinions on that or any other subject but if it is true, then no amount of sophistry, rationalization, debate or interpretation will change the fact. We can break ourselves on the truth and fight against it, the scriptures call it "kicking against the pricks", but if it is true, it will remain, despite any and all controversy.
Thus, I would agree, that it is not the truth that changes but only our flawed perception of it.

Truth is unchanging and eternal. As we learn more and grow- our perspectives change and we get a different understanding about that truth.

For example the Earth- we have always lived on Earth and it has always been round- that is an unchanging truth. However, for many centuries people knew that we lived on Earth- but did not know that it was round. As people started to study it and learn, we learned that it was round and we have learned so much more about it as our technology evolves.

So I guess the truth is unchanging- but as we learn more- we expand our understanding of that truth.

I think so.

My perception of US geography changed when I was about 4 or 5. I'd seen maps of the US- the (mostly) smooth northern border, the outcroppings of Maine and Florida, the curve of the west coast....

Between kindergarten and first grade, my family moved from southeast Idaho to northern Utah. My perception of how big the state of idaho was defiinitely changed when I first saw a map of the US... WITH the states outlined. I'd thought that Idaho was much bigger (I thougth it covered about 1/2 the distance from the Canadian border to the Mexican border).... and hence the planet was much smaller.

Now that I think about it, if I'd been right all along about the size of the planet, it would really be about 1/3 its actual diameter!

But the planet has always been this big. My perception is what changed.

Another perception that I'm a victim of....
If you call a dog's tail a leg, does that mean he has 5 legs? No- it's still a tail, no matter what you call it.

If you call Mormons non-Christian, does that mean they aren't Chrisitan? No- they still believe in and follow Jesus Christ and His teachings, no matter what people say.

If love of God is truth, then truth does not change as I now
understand truth. My truth only changes if I acquire some new
knowledge unknown to me before, that changes my attitude,
yet I feel it would just add to the foundation I already have.

We don't have a direct relationship with an unchanging and eternal truth. We only have a relationship with experience. It is the closest we have to truth, and it only completely applies to the time-space perspective of the one experiencing it.

Truth is unchanging and eternal. We must do our part to discern the spiritual truth, then as we become more enlightened we must amend our beliefs. God's word is unchanging and true, however man's interpretation is seriously flawed.

I agree with what that one guy said. "Truth is in the eye of the beholder." There isn't actually any truth. There's just what people believe. What is true to one person may not be to another. Technically it can change, if the person changes what they believe.

I agree. Truth is truth, but I understand it more as I grow and change. It's pretty relative.
