I was just sitting here, minding my own business when my brai went in to "weird mode" (well, ok, weirdER mode) and I was thinking about deaf animals. if they were sleeping, they really couldn't hear things around them.

:)

Sure the vibration on the floor...If you really want him to know it's running...Try sucking the cat into the vacuum... :)

They dont "hear" in the normal way. I have a 9 year old deaf cat. She knows when I come home because when I shut the door she feels the vibration. She also knows when I am running the vacum, unless she is in another room, mostly I think because I move things around and she "feels it" not really that the vacume is making vibrations. Usualy to get her attantion I stomp on the floor (or bed or couch) and she looks my way. When I got her as a kitten we taught her some signs for diffrent things. So we stomp the floor and when she looks at me I tell her what I want. When ever I turn on the radio she sits on the speakers. Or she will put her face to the front of them. I know she can feel the sound coming out. She was born deaf and though most deaf cats tend to be mute too, she has a very loud meow. Kinda like someone who is hard of hearing talks loudly because they cant hear themselves talk. So I guess to anwser your question if someone had a very loud vacum cleaner that made vibrations the cat could know that it was on.

Correct. However, vacuum cleaners also blow air and microscopic particles out. Not everything gets trapped in the filter, though if you have allergies, there are HEPA filter bags that are better than regular bags. Animals and even people can smell the air when a vacuum cleaner is running. They may also feel the floor vibrate or feel the warm air blowing out of a vacuum cleaner. People tend to ignore these things, because they don't provide any additional information, unless the person is deaf.

No, if they are totally deaf they will not hear anything. But, they can still feel vibrations. So it might feel the vibrating of the noise the vacuum makes on the floor. Did you know that people who are blind can hear better than we do? There hearing compensates for their blindness. Best of brain storming to you...

they might be able to tell if the vacuum cleaner was running through the vibration of the floor. If the animal is deaf, they'd most likely be more sensitive to things of that nature. :: shrug :: good question :)

They may not hear it, but they may feel the vibrations on the floor. I wouldn't surprise a deaf cat like that though!

Deaf people sense vibrations and feel air movement. Cats whiskers are very sensitive to vibrations. they don't need ears to know a vacuum is nearby.

Even if one (or an animal) is deaf, they will be aware of vibrations if the vibrations are strong enough.

They could probably feel the vibration from the vacuum cleaner.
