The cross is indeed a morbid symbol. It symbolizes the great pain and suffering that our Lord Jesus willingly submitted to in order that our sin debt could be paid and reconcile us back to Himself.
Because we do not want to ever diminish that from our thoughts we often surround ourselves with reminders of that sacrifice. Hence, many wear the cross.
Hope that helps.

If JFK were God Incarnated and died by rifle, I would wear a little rifle around my neck and put a big one on my wall .
As a Christian ,I believe that Jesus is God the Word become fully human and that His death is the all-sufficient sacrifice and reconciliation of the universe. I would not believe in a personal God who lacked the great empathy and mercy not to become one of us and one with us by incarnation.
For the Christian, the cross is the perfect symbol of love and liberation for as the Byzantine Easter/Pascha tropar says"By death He conquered Death and to those in the grave He granted life.
I find the crucifix an even more moving sign than the bare cross. My church has plenty of empty crosses and one large carved wood crucifix and a large painting of the resurrection with a painting of Christ's birth across from it.

To remind us that Jesus died on the cross. To remind us what he did for us.
In the end the cross was victorious because without Jesus on the cross taking our punishment, the one we deserve becasue of Adam and Eve (people we had nothing to do with, yet we are somehow accountable becasue of them), we wouldn't be saved. (I don't necessarily buy into this exact description but this is what most cross wearing Christians would say.)
So it's a symbol of that. Personally I don't have a problem with the cross. It's the crucifix (when the cross has a little Jesus on it) that grosses me out!

Catholics should wear Crucifixes -- not empty Crosses (aside from stylized ones of significance) -- around their necks. Why Crucifixes instead of empty Crosses? Because, as did Paul, we preach Christ crucified, and know that we get to the Resurrection through the Cross, that we are called to pick up our own crosses and carry them, offering up our sufferings in imitation of Him.

I'm atheist and I wear a cross because it belonged to my Great Great Grandmother and was passed to me by my Grandmother. I wear it in remembrance of them and nothing more. I also wear a gold heart on the same chain.

It's also the tool used to secure our salvation. It's also the tool Jesus used to conquer death and make eternal life available to all of us.
So... those are good enough reasons for me to wear a cross. :)

we were a cross, to remind us how GREAT GOD is!! He sent christ (his son) on this earth to die for our sins! and if he didnt do that then there would be no way that we could have salvation. No one besides Christ could have died on the cross because it took a perfect being to die!!

I've always wondered about this. It seems like Christians would be more inclined to wear a pendant of an empty tomb, eh? But to each his own, I say!
