if a god presented himself, and was the ultimate power, and a good friend to have, i'd accept him as a friend...

Ultimately, the question matters to everyone, because if He does and you are wrong, then you lose - big time.
I have two Masters degrees, including one in science. I used to be an atheist. The more I studied science the more I realized that the idea that the universe just happened by chance was naive and totally wrong. There is no question at all in my mind that God exists. He does not hide. He left in the world a very obvious trail that any person who wishes is able to follow. He also left a book, the Bible.
From a philosophical standpoint: If God does not exist, you make your own rules and do as you wish, because at the end you die and disappear and what you did in this life did not matter anyway. If God does exist, then He makes the rules, and as His creatures we must follow the rules or pay the penalty.
The Bible is the only book in the world that adequately explains how we got here, what went wrong, and what we must do about it, namely, to believe in Jesus Christ whom He has sent.
God is perfectly good, cannot tolerate evil. We are rebellious and evil by nature, so all of our sins must be punished. Jesus Christ, the perfect Son of God, has taken all of the sins of the world upon Himself and received our punishment. Those who receive Him and His free gift of atonement are Christians. Those who do not are destined for eternal damnation. That part ain't gonna be pretty.
Belief in God does not make one a Christian. The devil himself believes in God... and shudders because he knows how it will all end.
Blessings.

Your own thoughts and cooperation with others , looking to the world and to the sky refreshing your memory and pleasing your self need to kneel to the creator of The whole of space, time and all the matter and energy in the universe .
kissing your partner is the action of two persons one start and one kneel . and the kiss will be much wonderful if both of 2 persons know what the other dream kiss .
Life will be wonderful world kneel , learn ,act like kissers kneel , learn and act about a kiss .
anarchy and nonexistence is what would matter without GOD
Life change by choosing with your own will the GOD direction of human destiny on earth to the grave to the greatest explosion of earth which 100% proved then to the heat of the sun to another chose body by GOD himself as a reward of choosing the direction by your own will when u have had it completely as he chose one for you at the 1st time .
People can open the light of a lamp and as you can turn off it by destroying or pushing a button or another way - GOD Give you another body fits your will to be hermetic for the good of the universe .
All ladies will have the immortal unbelievable beauty which is the true feminine desire which came with the first birth on earth .
All Men will have the immortal unbelievable attraction which is the true manly desire which came with the first birth on earth .
Both will have none seen before (Abilities - Palaces - Food - Beauty - Sex - Friends )
As you can choose the right direction on earth by your own will as you take much higher abilities a kiss on Heaven could takes 100 thousand of years ... it's the perfection that can not been found on earth .... but Humans can taste some of it if they found the real dispatch which is not undistorted by the selfishness .

If you feel the need to believe there is someone
out there excusing all your bad behavior for the
mere penance of ten percent of your wage or a few
days in Sunday school, have at it.
But keep in mind you are not keeping this fantasy
to yourself.
You have a lot to learn if you think religion is harmless.
You just happen to think it is all fine and dandy because
it is what you believe and that is what is currently promoted.
Consider that not that long ago, your very religion thought
it was fine and dandy to have slaves. Haven't come
very far, now have we?
The moment a school requires your child to stand
and sing hymns to Allah, you'll develop an issue with it.
When people of other beliefs want to build hundred
foot tall statues of a voodoo king in your neighborhood,
you'll have something to say.
Some of you really need to step out of that bubble you
are in. The 'I'm a sweet little innocent christian, why
are you bothered by me" type is in the masses. When
you truly educate yourself you will begin to understand
why 'scoffing' takes place.

If there was the slightest valid evidence for a creator, I'd certainly want to know what was on his mind for me and why I was here. If he had some reasonable requests for me, I'd even probably be willing to endulge him -- he would be the creator after all.
However, the proof against theism is absolutely air-tight. Deism and atheism are the only logical choices.

Atheism seems to breed apathy.
But this is a reaction against all those years of hellfire and brimstone. And when people are told that they are going to suffer for not having someone else's view of the world, this tends to get one's dander up a bit.

As a scoffer, I do not believe in God, but would have no problem with such a god existing. I do, however, scoff at the nature of all monotheistic religions and the brutal nature of their hypothetical god. If such a being existed, it would most definitely not be the one depicted in your bible.
Your concept of god has no intrinsic or practical value whatsoever.

I assume, if we knew that God existed, would at least try to find some way of learning more about Him and getting a closer relationship with him due to that newfound knowledge....and trying to avoid religious venues where appropriate. But, until then, I have every right to scoff...

It depends on which God.
If it turned out that it was Joe Hovah and the Old Testament were literally true, then I would actively join the fight (or start it, if no one else took the initiative) to overthrow the tyrannical monster you call your god.

I wouldn't change a thing if a deity was proven to exist. Existence does not necessitate worship. Besides, any being worthy of worship wouldn't require or recognize it and it would thus be a waste of time.

There is insufficient empirical evidence to support the hypothesis of a god or gods. In short, there is no god, nor will there be.
