I am applying for a job. I know the HR woman's name but I don't know whether she's married or not. I feel it is too casual to just write her first and last name without a title in front of it. What is the proper etiquette?

Ms., or Ms (UK usage), (pronounced [mɪz] or [məz]) is an English honorific used with the last name or full name of a woman. Ms, like Mrs and Miss, is a contraction of the honorific "Mistress", which is the feminine of "Mister" or "Master". However, unlike Miss and Mrs., it does not presume the addressee's marital status. Ms. originated in the United States and was popularized in the 1970s. It is now the default form of address for business correspondence with a woman.

"Using Ms. obviates the need for the guesswork involved in figuring out whether to address someone as Mrs. or Miss: you can’t go wrong with Ms. Whether the woman you are addressing is married or unmarried, has changed her name or not, Ms. is always correct.

Ms.

Miss is for younger girls. ("Hey, Missy!")

Mrs. makes the assumption that she is married and many single women do not appreciate that. Most married women, on the otherhand, understand the Ms. unless you really should know they are married and use their husband's name. That's another thing to note, if a woman is married but still uses her maiden name, still call her Ms.

So, for example, it would be Mrs. Clinton, but Ms. Rodham.

I'd use Ms. Especially if you're going for a job. Miss is usually associated with younger women.

Actually, I believe Ms. is the proper salutation if you do not know her marital status. Mrs. is for married women, miss is for unmarried.
