I just heard some old hag on her cell phone in the restroom talking to someone about a girl named Lynn who keeps making one bad decision after another because she must "like being miserable". I find it hard to believe anyone would LIKE being miserable. So, what are your thoughts?

My mother is one of those people who like being miserable.

When it works, acting that way gets everyone about you scrabbling about, trying to reassure you and placate you; and that gives one a feeling a power and control over others.

But when folks are smart enough to see through the act, and refuse to play their little game, then the miserable person gets to feel sorry for herself and think that the world is against them, and it excuses them from having to take any responsibility for their own fate.

Now you know why I live on the other side of the continent from dear ol' Mum (first Alaska, then leapfrogging over to Maryland)...

No one actually likes being miserable, but some people seem to because they constantly are. Even if they have to go out of their way to find somethign to be misearable about.

In that specific case, Lynn must have some issues or poor decision skills, resulting in frequent bad decisions with negative consequences.

Basically, the phrase means that the person is often unhappy, by their own fault.

Nobody likes being miserable. People who repeatedly make poor decisions often do so because they are either unwilling or unable to learn from their past mistakes.

As for always being miserable, I think it becomes habitual. You become so used to being unhappy that you have a very difficult time moving to something better.

And then there are the psychological reasons, like depression et al. Sometimes when a person does something that he believes is unforgivable, that person will begin to believe that he deserves to suffer. And so that person will perpetuate his misery. I think this situation is the most similar to the statement "That person must like being miserable." They don't like being miserable, but they actually believe it would be wrong for them to be happy.

I don't think anyone actually wants to be miserable, it's just that if you have encountered a lot of pain and misery in life, then it becomes familiar and almost comforting. Happiness, peace and contentment become scary because it's not familiar. Then there's the fear that happiness wont last. There is also the factor that people have a hard time seeing objectively how they are setting themselves up over and over again for heartache and disappointment, they just think that bad things keep happening to them. People stuck in that constant cycle make me sad.

People that talk on cell phones in restrooms must like making the rest of us miserable.

A lot of women go from bad man to another -- the men hurt them physically and emotionally. After awhile I begin to wonder, do they go out and LOOK for men to treat them like dirt? Do they like to be treated like scum? The truth is that no, they don't like to be treated like crap yet they can't seem to stop picking bad apples.

Of course, no one goes out looking for a bad time but they might be making the same poor choices that lead to being miserable. I think some things just become normal or addicting. For instance, if you watched your mom be cut down and disrespected from your father as a young girl then you may expect it from a man and accept is as normal.

Or you may be addicted to doing bad or risky things because you like the thrill or the attention you receive from it. Stealing is a good example - some people steal just for the thrill and not to actually have the object they stole. After awhile the thrill becomes addicting and you may steal more and more until you're caught.

(In regard to the person making the bad decision)People just have a hard time making decision. Sometimes people just need a good friend around to help them make that good decision.
Those girls that made that comment should be more nice. Instead of criticizing anyone they should look at what they say about others.

Can't believe any one likes being miserable. Many miserable people like to spread it around. Wonder the same about "misery loves company".

She means that she really feels bad for that person. That she can't understand why she keeps makeing those mistakes... it's as if she "likes to be miserable". She basically thinks that person could do better but chooses not to.

Actually it is a common phrase. It's been around for years but I haven't heard it being used in a while. It's just a term that basically refers to a person whose actions can't be explained especially since they seem to be constantly making wrong decisions in their life. It's a term to be taken lightly.
